Tom Sanford, a NY based artist, has created paintings depicting pop-culture icons before, but none have created a "regular trickle of hate mail/criticism" like this one. The 2005 painting - a depiction of the 2004 shooting of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott by ex-Marine Nathan Gale (previously) - is being auctioned in November. Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was a British painter. Spencer studied at the Slade in London, but he spent most of his life in the village of his birth, Cookham in Berkshire. Deeply religious and obsessed by resurrection, Spencer viewed Cookham as a "village in heaven" where everything was invested with mystical significance. Inspired by his idol Giotto, he took scenes from the Bible and restaged them in this tiny village by the Thames. Christ carries the cross through Spencer's front garden. Jesus heals in the attic of his house. Stanley and his brother watch from behind the shed as Christ is betrayed at the bottom of the garden. He is crucified on telegraph poles in the high street. In the village churchyard, the dead are rising. Spencer served in Macedonia during the First World War and, deeply affected by the experience, spent 9 years from 1923 onwards decorating the specially commissioned Sandham Memorial Chapel (inspired by Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel) with intricate murals documenting his experiences [photo gallery] [video tour.] He was officially commissioned as a war artist in the Second World War, and spent 7 years documenting the work at Lithgow's shipyard in Glasgow in a series of monumental canvasses. An exquisite draughtsman who was equally at home painting everyday subjects, for too long his eccentricities overshadowed his art. The reputation of this "divine fool of British art," who turned up for his knighthood with a carrier bag, sketched on toilet paper, and pushed his easel around Cookham in a pram, has in recent decades been radically reappraised. The frank and intimate approach seen in his domestic works, often exposing his turbulent personal life, influenced a generation of artists. His astonishing nudes of the 1930's (nsfw - he was almost prosecuted for obscenity over these in the 1950's) provided the template for the work of Lucian Freud. He created an invaluable record of two World Wars. "Half a century ago, Spencer seemed old-fashioned; today, art has caught up with him. In 1666 Willem Van de Velde, the Elder made a pen and ink drawing of the Council of War held on the eve of what was to be known as the four-day battle during the Second Anglo-Dutch War.
Maarten Platje brings it new life ( Click Paintings to enlarge).
The news of the Dutch gathering is briefly mentioned by Pepys ” … some sudden newes of the Dutch being come out”.
It is considered that Willem Van de Velde, the Elder, and his son, Willem Van de Velde, the Younger provide the one accurate record of Seventeenth Century warships, from mid-century on.

Rabbit Tarot by Nakisha Elsje VanderHoeven. She sells prints and original paintings from the Rabbit Tarot, along with other animal paintings and sculptures in her Etsy shop. She has a blog, can be followed on twitter, and many of her images are on flickr. Original paintings from the Rabbit Tarot will be on display at City Trees Gallery in Seattle in November along with quilts based on the Rabbit Tarot by Cindi Glinski of Cottontail Quilts.

Jean Fouquet, peintre et enlumineur du XVe siecle is an exquisite French-language exhibition devoted to the fifteenth-century painter Jean Fouquet. Fouquet--known, among other things, as the painter of (possibly) the first stand-alone self-portrait--is best remembered for the Melun Diptych, now split between two museums. His illuminations include the Book of Hours of Étienne Chevalier and contributions to the Book of Hours of Simon de Varie, among others.

Bernie Fuchs, Illustrator

Bernie Fuchs, one of the all-time greats of American illustration, has passed away. A phenomenally talented artist, he didn't start studying to be an artist until an industrial accident the year after high school cost him 3 fingers, and ended his dream of becoming a professional jazz trumpeter. (And he lost those fingers on his drawing hand!) He began his commercial art career at New Center Studio in Detroit, working on illustrations for the auto companies. In a few short years, it was off to NYC, where he was soon dazzling the best in the business. "I don't know who the hell did this, but the business is never going to be the same." After mastering the existing illustration styles of the day, he went on to create his signature style of transparent washes of oil color, all grounded with spectacular draughtsmanship and a stunning sense of design. Knossos: Fakes, Facts, and Mystery. "The masterpieces of Minoan art are not what they seem... The truth is that these famous icons are largely modern. As any sharp-eyed visitor to the Heraklion museum can spot, what survives of the original paintings amounts in most cases to no more than a few square inches. The rest is more or less imaginative reconstruction, commissioned in the first half of the twentieth century by Sir Arthur Evans, the British excavator of the palace of Knossos (and the man who coined the term 'Minoan' for this prehistoric Cretan civilization, after the mythical King Minos who is said to have held the throne there). As a general rule of thumb, the more famous the image now is, the less of it is actually ancient."

Running until the end of October the paintings have the common theme of 'Libraries in the Community" and are a celebration of both the buildings themselves and their patrons. Six-year-old artist. Extraordinary understanding of perspective and shading. Side by side comparisons. Local coverage. I'll make the connection to that film before you do because as result I was initially very sceptical. But having watched the boy paint so freely on camera and in front of witnesses and clearly creating the lines (he was also seen painting on BBC Breakfast this morning), I'm convinced. This is amazing.

Apes do it. Birds do it. Even educated elephants do it. But can a dog do it? Can a dog make art? Meet Tillamook Cheddar, an adorable Jack Russell Terrier who, after 19 solo shows, has made more than $100,000 in sales of paintings like these. (I believe she did not choose the titles.) Opinions on her work vary. SAW Gallery's exhibit on animal art. (Any Ottawagonians seeing this?) Previously. Previously. Me, I'm open to ape art (some are more skeptical), have reservations about elephants, think the bower birds are doing something awesome that is mostly hardwired and partly inexplicable, but the dog may as well be a wind-up paintbrush for the artist owner who has carefully set up the media in advance. Her selected output is often really attractive (see: windup paintbrush), but that no more makes her an artist than her ability to roll in smelly stuff and lick herself thoroughly.

Her adventures have been legendary, encompassing Greenwich Village in the 50s, London in the 60s and India in the 70s.
