If you want a vaginal orgasm, according to a new study size does matter. But is there a hidden agenda behind the study? Dr Vivienne Cass, a professor at Curtin University of Technology in Perth and author of The Elusive Orgasm, worries about the motivations of research that emphasises vaginal over clitoral orgasms, arguing that it is part of the increasing "medicalisation of sexuality". She argues that women who can't achieve vaginal orgasms are basically treated as sick and this, in turn, allows drug companies to sell them a pill. But Associate Professor Rosemary Coates, president of the World Association for Sexual Health, believes that such assumptions are "reverting back to Freudian assumptions about female sexual responses," saying that "some form of clitoral stimulation is almost always required to trigger orgasm." However the study authors dismiss this view as "clitorocentric" and blame it for the "destruction of human pleasure." Meanwhile, the studies central claim, that size matters shows that one-third of the women surveyed said that they were more likely to have an orgasm with a longer than average penis. "Given that the vagina [has a high nerve density] throughout… more thorough stimulation of the full length of the vagina… might result in a more fulfilling experience," the paper's authors write. They also found that sexual education which taught women the vagina was important for eliciting female orgasm was also of benefit. The message then is clear. If you're a man with a longer than average penis, don't go asking any frogs to marry you. [rimshot]
