The Nashville Portraits

Born and raised in New Jersey, Jim McGuire was an unlikely country music-lover, but one song changed all that. McGuire was twelve years old on the day he heard Hank Snow’s “Spanish Fireball” for the first time, and he instantly fell in love with country music forever. Music has since been a huge part of McGuire’s life—a muse for his photography—The Nashville Portraits. Then, in 1971, McGuire caught a performance in Greenwich Village by John Hartford and the Aereo-Plain Band—consisting of Hartford, Vassar Clements, Tut Taylor, and Norman Blake. With the help of friend and record producer David Bromberg, he was able to get them all back to his Gramercy Park studio for some late night, impromptu portraits. The portraits of Hartford, Tut and Vassar shot that night, were the beginning of what evolved into the Nashville Portraits. [via]

Extravagant Crowd - Carl Van Vechten’s Portraits of Women and Photos of African Americans. Previous post by ND¢: Creative Americans: Portraits by Carl Van Vechten 1932-1964. Also, public domain works from Wikimedia Commons. Van Vechten was an influential critic, novelist, photographer, and promoter of the arts. He was an early patron of the Harlem Renaissance - but sparked a huge controversy with his unfortunately titled novel, Nigger Heaven. Despite this controversy, his interest in and high regard for African American arts was not in dispute. The Index and Introduction to the Portraits of Women collection is quite good, but for those who may not want to wade through all 96 pages of his African American collection, here is a selection I particularly liked: Eartha Kitt, 1954 Billy Dee Williams, 1963 James Earl Jones, 1961 Dizzie Gillespie, 1955, 2 James Baldwin, 1955 Ralph Bunche, 1951 Harry Belafonte, 1954 Billie Holiday, 1949, another, and with Mister Pearl Bailey, 1946 Leontyne Price, 1951, and as Bess Ossie Davis, 1951 Joyce Bryant, 1953 Diahann Carroll, 1955

They've been making tableaus of types of people for 14 years now and it's all on their site. Bert Teunissen - Domestic Landscapes. Photographs of (mostly) senior citizens in their living rooms and kitchens. Since 1996, Dutch photographer Bert Teunissen has been travelling around western Europe, and more recently Japan, making portraits of people living in houses built before electricity was commonplace. His travel diaries give more background, and more photos of the houses. Article in the IHT from last April.

La Real Frida offers beautiful film footage of Frida Kahlo.* Beyond her own self-portraits, some of the most iconic images of Frida are portraits by her 10-year lover, photographer Nickolas Muray. *Clips of Frida on the stretcher (1:40) and when she is painting her hand (2:24) are not Frida, but from a bio-pic, "Frida Naturaleza Viva." In addition to his Frida portraits, Muray's work chronicled the glitterati of the era for Vogue and Vanity Fair. The George Eastman House has a 15-page collection of Muray's work, an enjoyable gallery to browse. See the first major Kahlo exhibit in the United States in nearly fifteen year at Philadelphia Museum of Art between now and May 18, 2008 See Frida Kahlo through the lens of The Lens of Nickolas Muray at the Delaware Art Museum now through March 30, 2008.

Arnold Newman, Environmental Portraits

Since I was only a child, Arnold Newman (gallery; another gallery) (obituary) has been my favorite photographer. He specialized in "environmental portraiture," carefully posing his subjects in surroundings that spoke to their personalities. He usually spent hours or days meticulously planning every aspect of the shot, and not always to make the subject look good. Many of his photos became the definitive photograph of the person. I hope one day to make even one photograph that comes close to what he was able to do.

The relationship between the two arts was complex and intertwined.
