Dr. Brian May,
CBE, PhD
FRAS, recently
retired Chancellor of
LJMU, winner of
The RPS' Saxby Award for achievements in the field of stereoscopic photography, distinguished
author,
lecturer,
film producer,
entrepreneur, and
occasional musician has been quite busy lately
trying to prevent a sweeping cull of the British badger population. His efforts have been surprisingly successful. The overwhelming response to
his government petition led
to a parliamentary debate, where MPs overwhelmingly rejected the cull in a non-binding vote. The government has attempted to press forward with the cull, but has faced
significant resistance from scientists, naturalists, and concerned citizens that have led to
implementation delays. The movement recently got the attention of
Weebl, who has
recorded a rough cut of a new song with Brian May called
"Save the Badger Badger Badger" which was
recently used in a flash mob protest. The final version will include
additional vocals by
Brian Blessed.

In 2010, Marvel Comics artist Steve Bunch posted an anonymous page to his blog that featured
X-Men frontman Wolverine inexplicably encountering Queen frontman Freddy Mercury, an art submission originally sent to Darren Auck, then head of Marvel's art-correction team, in the 1990s. Portland-based comics artist Colleen Coover read Bunch's post, and in 2012 she decided to do something about it:
she decided to recreate the page, adding color (both literal and metaphorical) to the meeting of these two (actual and arguable) mutants. Since then,
other comic artists have decided to recreate the historic meeting depicted on that original, baffling/brilliant page: Some are
magical; some are professional grade (pages
one and
two); some are
prosaic; some are, frankly,
adorable.
Not all of them are on Coover's page. Do you hold the secret to this story? Coover would like to see your take: "I invite other artists to do the same, by which exercise we may one day come close to the fictional Truth of the matter."

2Day FM's DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian phoned the King Edward VII Hospital from Australia on Wednesday morning pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles asking for an update on the condition of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. The call was described as a
prank by the DJs who made it and
foolish by the hospital. The nurse who answered the call, Jacintha Saldanha, was convinced by the impersonation and relayed confidential medical details. Today Ms Saldanha was
found dead, early reports indicate the death is not suspicious and is
suspected to be suicide.

"
Take everything you know and imagine about Freddie Mercury: the iconic British rock star, the philandering partier, the serial maker of testosteroned-anthems, and flip it around to something less familiar: Farrokh Bulsara, a demure, bucktoothed Indian boy in a Bombay boarding school, listening to Lata Mangeshkar, playing cricket." -- Janaki Challa writes about the contradiction in the openly gay image of Freddie Mercury the performer and his much more private cultural identity off it.

“When Jim first came to me with this idea of putting two guys inside a giant alien queen suit,” Winston admitted, “I thought, ‘This man is out of his mind.’ Nothing like that had been done before. But in the next moment, I realized that if he had imagined it, we could probably do it.” -
How Stan Winston and Jim Cameron built the Alien Queen. Original creature creature H.R. Giger was disapointed not to be involved, leading to
this letter from Cameron.

We've had a lot of posts about Bohemian Rhapsody, but this is worth one more listen. Richie Castellano has put together a one man show, split screen version of Queen's hit,
and nails it!

Before the iconic Power Rangers, Toei Productions tried some other "Super Sensei" series including 1977's
JAKQ (pronounced jah-kuh) with their playing-card-themed identities. With online poker sites down, maybe it's time for them to make a comeback?

Voice of the Hive is a collection of informative and well-written stories about honeybees.
Half of the tales are told from a human beekeeper's perspective, and are filled with valuable knowledge for potential hobbyists.
The other half are compelling vignettes of a single bee's life -- widely diverse and compelling, told from each individual bee's perspective. The two elements come together to paint a fascinating picture of this noble insect's existence.
