Memphis music legend Jim Dickinson has died. Dickinson's full credits are as impressive a resume as you'll find over the past 40 years: session player for many, including the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Aretha Franklin. Producer for albums by Jason and the Scorchers, Big Star, the Replacements, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Mudhoney. Among his survivors are sons Cody and Luther of the North Mississippi All-Stars. His death comes one week after a benefit show in his honor headlined by John Hiatt. R.I.P., Jim.

R.I.P. Bob Bogle. Bogle, the lead guitarist for The Ventures (previously) died yesterday after a 12-year battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, though he lived to see the band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of last year. The Ventures surf-guitar sound influenced a wide variety of musicians, from Peter Frampton to Marc Knopfler. Bogle co-founded the group with Don Wilson in 1958, and they made their big splash covering the Chet Atkins tune Walk Don't Run in 1960. While they faded from the American seen in the early 70's, there were occasional revivals of interest, as when the movie Pulp Fiction featured the classic surf sound, and the band remained intensely popular in Japan, outselling The Beatles 2:1. The musical style they pioneered lives on in modern bands like The Aqua Velvets, and in new and unusual combinations, such as the klezmer sound of Meshugga Beach Party, or the Russian-influenced Igor & the Red Elvises.

RIP Tropicalia composer & arranger Rogério Duprat

Composer and arranger Rogério Duprat passed away on Thursday. Duprat had a substantial career in music for films and commercials, but he is best known for shaping the sound of Tropicalia, the revolutionary stew of Brazilian folk styles, bossa nova, MPB, rock, jazz, blues and psychedelica. Derek Bailey has died. Here's an interview with him from 2001, and another about playing in Japan. Bailey was considered by many to be the father of free improvisation, beginning with his band Joseph Holbrooke, with Tony Oxley and Gavin Bryars, and, in addition to his voluminous discography, is the author of a book on the nature of improvisation.

Rober Quine, R.I.P.

Another member of the Blank Generation lost. Robert Quine was found dead in his apartment in NYC yesterday, he committed suicide. He was sixty years old and had played with Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Lou Reed, Matthew Sweet, Lloyd Cole, Materia, Brian Eno and others, he also cut an LP with Jody Harris (Escape), and one with Fred Maher (Basic). It has been reported that he was suffering depression brought on by the death of his wife Alice last August. Robert also recorded the Velvet Underground on a hand held cassette deck, the highlights were issued last year as The Quine Tapes a three CD set. Personally, I'll always remember him from the jagged guitar parts from Richard Hell and Voidoids' "Blank Generation", which were the only guitar parts that I ever bothered to learn and faithfully reproduce note for note in the many times my band covered the song. Condolences to those that survive him.
