Early spirit photography
Ghosts, apparitions, angels, spiritual visitations and views of the future
"The relationship between photography and the spirit world of
ghosts, apparitions and angels
during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century was a blending of
popular belief
and
scientific fraud
. The lack of sophistication in the public in an age of deeply held religious values and the generally accepted belief that the camera recorded truth allowed the unscrupulous to exploit the situation for financial gain...
This online exhibition explores the diverse interactions between mortals and the spiritual world

Something about Mary
Mary, quite contrary
The
Christianity Today
weblog offers a fabulously dense post (pegged to
this recent UK news story
) about the Protestant embrace of Mary. Lots of fascinating links - including one from the
blog of the President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
- will bring you up to speed on "the 'Protestants and Mary' deluge of the last three years." Hours of provocative reading for anyone interested in Christian sects.

"I never had much confidence in the attention span of elected officials for any kind of deep thinking about important issues,"
"I never had much confidence in the attention span of elected officials for any kind of deep thinking about important issues,"
jabs Republican U.S. judge Alfred Goodwin in a feisty interview. He seems unfazed by the outraged reaction to his ban on government teachers leading a theistic "pledge of allegiance," ripping into the press "("Their attention span can't handle anything more than a haiku of about four lines"), the President ("I'm a little disappointed in our chief executive -- who nobody ever accused of being a deep thinker -- for popping off") and "this wrap-yourself-in-the-flag frenzy." I'm starting to see why he's
"among the best-liked jurists on the 9th Circuit bench, always affable and gracious."

God, politics and America's most notorious coin
God, politics and America's most notorious coin
Teddy Roosevelt described the appearance of "In God We Trust" on U.S. money as "dangerously close to sacrilege." He ordered the motto kept off
new $20 gold coins
designed by famous sculptor
Augustus Saint-Gaudens
. Congress demanded the motto restored, making the earlier coins into
collector's items
. The motto didn't appear on paper money until 1957, just after "In God We Trust"
replaced the secular "E Pluribus Unum"
as the national motto and the words "So help me God" were added to the oaths of office for federal judges. Meanwhile, religious conservatives are
using the motto
to put
"In God We Trust" posters
in every classroom in America.

Know-Nothings, Bible Riots and the Catholic Church
Know-Nothings, Bible Riots and the Catholic Church
Take a break from priest abuse news with this detailed history of anti-Catholic bias in the United States. In 1834, an angry Boston mob
burned down a convent
after Harriet Beecher Stowe's father preached that Catholic immigrants were a
threat to democracy
. In Philadelphia, the
1844 Bible Riots
lasted for days, destroying Irish-Catholic churches and neighborhoods. In 1855, Louisville
Know-Nothings
went on a
"Bloody Monday"
rampage that left dozens of Catholics dead. Even telegraph inventor
Samuel Morse
got into the act with a series of anonymous anti-Catholic letters. Fascinating stuff, but oops, break's over. We now return to our
regularly scheduled program
.
