Despite a customer base that crosses many demographics
, a large part of the video game industry has remained resolutely focused on appealing and marketing to male players in the 18-24 age group. It wasn't always this way. Although early coin-op and console game development was male-dominated, titles in the 1970s were either marketed for entire families or for adults in bars and later arcades. What changed? Polygon investigates
"The experiences of women may not be easy to portray in the aggressive world of videogames. If such a game is made - and I hope it is - it will be because its creators demanded to be heard. It will be created because women made it." (Source)
While the vast majority of video game titles are designed primarily by men, women have been a part of video game development
since the earliest arcades. Here are some of their games: [more inside]
Remember the janitorial space opera Space Quest? Well, so do a lot of other people.
Starting with The Sarien Encounte
r, hapless janitor Roger Wilco was thrust into more
absurd adventures, which came to an abrupt end with Space Quest 6
. For years, Roger has been left hanging with no resolution to his story, and no new adventures, but all that has changed with the release of two fan made sequels; Vohaul Strikes Back
and Space Quest: Incinerations.
And for those of you who just can't get enough Wilco related hilarity there is a fan made VGA remake of the famously punishing Space Quest II
Remember to put the gem in your mouth. All of these fan made games are pretty good, but you don't have to take my word for it.
16-bit color schemes, in a classic retro VGA interface! New soundtracks and voiceovers! No typing required! Infamous Adventures
resurrects and lovingly remakes Sierra Games from the 1980's: Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge
and Kings Quest III
. SQ2 was released yesterday after more than five years in production, and comes complete with a cheesy trailer. Available for download for PC and Mac, but be forewarned, the game is a total memory hog, and uses up a whole meg of RAM.
Marina Abramovic's 2010 MoMA exhibit, "The Artist Is Present"
adventure games. (No word yet on whether the game has made anyone cry

The Sierra Network

of Torin's Passage
. There are 12 videos so far. See also: Ways to die in the game
, including the easter egg message you got if you made a hilarious but stupid choice at the end.
Kings Quest 9, Leisure Suit Larry 8
, and Space Quest 7
legendary Adventure Gaming francises
are stuck in vaporware purgatory. No new Larry according to Al Lowe
, but KS9 goes on developed by fans without Roberta Williams
, and Scott Murphy's
(of The Two Guys from Andromeda) attempt at SQ7 got cancelled. No word from Jane Jenson
on a new Gabriel Knight, Police Quest
still lives on, although no longer in adventure format. Of course what I was REALLY researching for was the possiblity of a sequel to The Adventures of Willy Beamish
. Oh well, at least you can still rock out to all the old Sierra Tunes.
Overall, not a bad legacy for a company whose first adventure game was Softporn.
Remember the old Sierra Games?
Remember back in the early 80's when King Quest
hit the streets? Did you ever think to your self how they created that game? Sierra used a gaming engine called Adventure Gaming Interpreter, or AGI for short, for many of their popular adventure games. This engine which was "hacked" in the early to mid 90's, and there are groups of people that still develop games to be used with home made hacks of this engine. Find out how you can make your own games like KQ or take a look at what have people created or are creating right now, here
. There's even someone saying that they are porting the hacked AGI stuff to Dreamcast
