Jacob Appelbaum speaks about resistance in his keynote address at 29c3 (previously : 28c3, 24c3) 29c3 had over 100 talks across numerous topics related to technology, information, and related human rights areas. All talks should eventually appear at media.ccc.de and various mirrors. In fact, the mirrors host talks that haven't yet made it onto media.ccc.de, such as Appelbaum and Dingledine's talk on the Tor Software Ecosystem (see also their talk last year), as well as smaller versions and torrents (keynote by torrent : 236meg 84meg) The German language talks posses an English audio track as well. Amongst the non-technical talks you'll find : Jesselyn Radack, Thomas Drake, and William Binney discussing the harassment they experienced after becoming whistle blowers in the U.S. Violet Blue's talk Hackers As A High-Risk Population about harm reduction methodology. There are various talks by activists resisting ACTA, SOPA, IPRED, TPP and similar legislative efforts or proposing specific legislation, including Ot van Daalen and Rejo Zenger's on the Dutch Net Neutrality Law, Kirsten Fiedler and Markus Beckedahl's Privatisierung der Rechtsdurchsetzung and Jérémie Zimmermann's Defending Online Freedoms. Gregor Hackmack's talk about Hamburg's Transparenzgesetz, a new "proactive" transparency law, was particularly interesting.

Anti-ACTA protests have begun around Europe after the secret treaty was signed in Tokyo last Friday. Activists have planned larger protests for Saturday 11 February. The European Parliament will formally consider ACTA in June. (pre viou sly) In Poland, ACTA sparked large protests with 15,000 protestors gathering in Kraków, 5000 in Wroclaw, and thousands more across other Polish cities (wp). ACTA prompted a no confidence vote as well, which features Palikot’s Movement wearing Guy Fawkes masks. In France, there was a large anti-ACTA protest near Bastille in Paris and smaller ones in Lyon and Bordeaux. French MEP Kader Arif, chief rapporteur on ACTA, resigned in protest of how the treaty's negotiations kept lawmakers in the dark, denouncing the process as a "charade" (interview). "I signed ACTA out of civic carelessness, because I did not pay enough attention." - Slovenia's ambassador In the U.S. there has been debate over the constitutionality of President Obama's plan to bypass Senate ratification by declaring the treaty an executive agreement. The once-secret Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) slouches toward signing on Saturday. ACTA is expected to raise constitutional issues in the U.S., raise soverenty issues in the E.U., give copyright holders extensive powers to impose DRM and identify alleged infringers, and increase health risks worldwide. In addition, the U.S. has launched the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP) to obtain what copyright provisions were stripped from ACTA. (see michaelgeist.ca, techdirt, or slashdot) There remain plausible options for limiting the damage done in Europe by the copyright clauses, or at least excluding patents from section two.
