Are we having fun yet?

As over 4,000 hungry and doubtless pretty funky passengers and crew of Carnival Cruise Line (Yeah, the Costa Concordia was theirs, too) ship Triumph, who've been without ventilation, hot food, and working plumbing [NYT link] since a fire broke out in the engine rooms last Sunday, near land (they hope) it's a good opportunity to re-read David Foster Wallace's classic piece on luxury cruises, "Shipping Out"[.pdf] (also published as "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again.") And personally, I don't care if he may have made some of it up.

11 Months, 3000 pictures and a lot of coffee.

If you've ever wondered what it looks like to have a Triumph Spitfire engine miraculously re-build and install itself into a Classic sports car through the magic of time lapse, then your day may just get a little bit better.

This could be the biggest triumph ...

Teach With Portals. Last summer, a New York Times review of Portal 2 made the following prediction: "Somewhere out there an innovative, dynamic high school physics teacher will use Portal 2 as the linchpin of an entire series of lessons and will immediately become the most important science teacher those lucky students have ever had." With Teach With Portals, Valve's new education initiative, this just might be possible. [more inside]

Pioneers are just faceless figurines in museums

For the last two years Scott Toepfer have been taking still photographs for a personal project entitled ‘It’s Better In The Wind,’ all the while collecting video footage from each ride as friends traveled around the Western United States together. Toepfer has been slowly editing the footage into a visual scrapbook of sorts for those who partook, and those who followed them via the web. No preaching the triumphs and failures of the motorcycle industry, no divisive commentary between manufacturers and styles…just a collection of imagery that will hopefully inspire more people to take to the road and discover what there is outside of our respective communities. DIY Portal Gun. Making a note here: huge success.

DIY Portal Gun on flickr, with a few other pictures and build notes. You want of your own, you can either contact this guy or just ask Aperture about working at their test facilities.

Triumph speaks!

We've heard that Triumph was thrown out of the DNC. Here's a recent interview with comic Robert Smigel about his insult comic dog, his new DVD, SNL, Comedy Central, Adam West, and more.

I kid, I kid

Triumph Slams O'Reilly NPR's Fresh Air interview with Late Night's Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. He laughs, he cries, and obviously, he poops. And he makes fun of Bill O'Reilly in the process, referencing O'Reilly's Fresh Air appearance last month. (found via DailyKos poster secondcityscientist)

These People

These People are not actors - they are actual people waiting to see a movie.
