Icelandic landscapes, set to Japanese post-rock

Legend: A Journey Through Iceland is a 12 min. 31 sec. long time-lapse video of Icelandic landscapes, set to the music of MONO, a Japanese post-rock band. A bit more MONO and pleasant landscapes inside. The track is the first song form the forthcoming album, For My Parents. If you'd like more MONO, The Sky Remains The Same As Ever, their 1 hr 47 min documentary movie from 2008 is on YouTube (for now).

The video was directed by Henry Jun Wah Lee, and you can see more of his work on his Evosia Studios website, along with 20 videos on his Evosia Vimeo account.

Views from the ISS at Night (Vimeo) - Knate Myers assembled this video from a series of time-lapse videos taken aboard the ISS. Plus, one of my favorite movie soundtracks! Naturally, go full-screen HD for best experience. The photos and original time-lapse videos are available from NASA-Johnson Space Center's Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth (Previously)

Several days in the life...

Photographer Tolu Omokehinde, a senior at Montgomery Blair High School in suburban Silver Spring, Maryland, shot 175,000 photographs over a 7-month period and edited them together into a time-lapse video of the daily rhythms at Blair. Blair is home to nearly 2,800 students and hosts the math/science/computer science magnet program for Montgomery County, which borders on Washington DC. Omokehinde's video highlights Blair's ethnic diversity: a minority-majority school (25.9% African American, 24.0% Caucasian, 29.2% Hispanic and 16.8% Asian) with a large immigrant population, the countries of origin found among Blair students are reflected in the national flags flow in the central hallway.

(Notable Blair alumni include Goldie Hawn, Connie Chung, Matt Drudge, and Ben Stein)

Amazing HD Timelapse Day and Night Video of Yosemite National Park

There's been a lot of great photography of Yosemite National Park. National Geographic has done some excellent work and there's plenty of photos that provide a great historical view of the area. More recently there was a fantastic zoomable 17 gigapixel project (previously). But this HD time-lapse day & night video of several locations around Yosemite Park provides perhaps the most amazing view of the area yet. More info on the making of the video at Project Yosemite.

"Where I come from, a little patience at the crosswalk usually rewards me with a stoplight-induced pause in traffic, but here things are different. In crowded cities, in jungles, libraries and ancient ruins, Lam captures scenes familiar to those that live there and foreign to those of us that don't."*

Time keeps on slippin'

We've all seen variations on the personal time-lapse video -- a snapshot every day for six years, or a look at a young girl's first decade. But nobody's done it quite like Sam Klemke. For thirty-five years the itinerant freelance cartoonist has documented his life in short year-end reviews, a funny, weary, eccentric, and hopeful record dating all the way back to 1977. Recently optioned for documentary treatment by the government of Australia, you can skim Sam's opus in reverse in the striking video "35 Years Backwards Thru Time with Sam Klemke," an ever-evolving home movie montage that grows grainier and grainier as it tracks Sam "from a paunchy middle aged white bearded self deprecating schluby old fart, to a svelt, full haired, clean shaven, self-important but clueless 20 year old."

Between August and October this year the crew of the ISS used a special low-light HD camera to visually capture the earth as it passed beneath them. The result, edited together by Michael König and set to music, is jaw-droppingly spectacular.

It may be redundant to tell you to set Vimeo to full-screen mode before playing, but do so - you won't regret it. Post intended as something of a sequel to this.

To me that’s backwards! Humans, Autochthony, Earth, and a home for us all at the end of the Universe.

Time lapse videos can be breathtaking, lovely, and a joy to watch… but they can also show you something you may not have thought about before. Before I even read the caption for Murray Fredericks’ video called "IRIDIUM", I knew it was filmed in the southern hemisphere. Can you guess how? If you live in the northern hemisphere — and odds are very good that you do — then you may have noticed the motion of the Sun and stars looked a bit odd. For example, as you watch the Sun set at the beginning of the video, it does so at an angle moving from the upper right to the lower left. The stars do too. When they rise, they move from the lower right to the upper left
To me that’s backwards! VIA: BadAstronomy.

This short is part of a larger project, known as SALT (Artist statement, project description - PDF);
From apocalyptic red Martian-like landscapes to the surreal hypnotic beauty of a limitless sky reflected on the lakes surface. As Murray goes about his daily routine with discipline and attention, these surroundings convey a simple and emotional story.

One man, alone on the surface of the earth, in the middle of the universe.

Time-Lapse short produced at Lake Eyre in central Australia as part of the SALT project.
