why can't they dance?

As the twittersphere ridicules a White Man March in NYC, perhaps now is the time to watch Aamer Rahman, one half of the comedy tour Fear of a Brown Planet (with Nazeem Hussain), on the topic of Reverse Racism.

Waiting on you

Last night, the synthpop band Future Islands (previously on MF) previewed their new LP performingSeasons (Waiting On You)” on Late Show with David Letterman. Singer Samuel T. Herring’s performance is always something to behold, but his gravely shouts and epic dance moves had a particular effect on Letterman, who seemed even more jazzed than usual.

He was only a fighter in the ring

"Assault In The Ring" (originally called "Cornered: A Life in the Ring") is a film about a boxing match that took place between undefeated prospect Billy Collins Jr and Luis Resto. What began as a match turned into a life altering moment for both participants - Collins' career dreams ended and Resto and his trainer Panama Lewis landed in prison for their illegal actions. The subsequent investigation and trial have led many to declare this bout the darkest day in boxing history. But the film-maker doesn't stop there. He tracked down the surviving principals and arranged meetings among some of them, trying to see if the documentary can be an occasion for reconciliation or justice. Watch the film in its entirety on Youtube here.

People should believe 71% of what they hear on the news

Ron Burgundy did the News last week in Bismark North Dakota. Some thought it made a mockery of the news, but the station is pretty happy with how it turned out. This week, Ron dropped in on Emerson College to give some advice to the journalism grads, starting with "Of course you have to report the facts. Unless it’s too hard to find the facts — then, just make something up."

GET QUIZZED IN THE FACE

BILLY ON THE STREET is a show on Fuse network (but made by Funny or Die) in which host Billy Eichner asks random people on the streets of New York (and sometimes celebrity guests) sometimes rude, often unanswerable questions for small amounts of money. If he ever approaches you, remember that the best answer is always Meryl FUCKING Streep (who he met, epically, on Watch What Happens Live.)

A big kick, as high as I could

Guided By Voices {previously} has put out more songs than you can imagine (since allegedly the mid-80s [GBV Doc, Audio NSFW]), most of them under 2 minutes [Concert from 1996]. Which certainly might make it hard to decide what album to start with. Judging by volume of cover versions however, there is no contest. By that metric, Alien Lanes is the most beloved Guided By Voices record. [more inside]

I can't make you know me

After he beat out some popular dance music favorites to win a Best New Artist Grammy last week, many asked Who Is Bon Iver? Some, confused further, asked Who Is Bonnie Bear? Parents everywhere answered: Um, THIS is Bonnie Bear. Fortunately, all this confusion has had a charming result. All the while, Bon Iver has blithely been making music. Yesterday Justin Vernon released a live video of him and frequent BI contributor Sean Carey rocking two minimalist pianos on some old favorites and a brand new cover of Bonnie Rait's "I Can't Make You Love Me".
