This past November, news broke of a rather odd domestic terror plot that had been broken up by the FBI. Four senior citizens in northern Georgia who met regularly at a local Waffle House, were allegedly planning to spread ricin and botulinum toxin in Atlanta and Washington, DC, in order to kill millions of people and "save the Constitution." But was there ever really a conspiracy?

Then there are longer lists (as linked above the break, and available here as words with definitions behind the links). If you want your Liff digitally, but off-line, there's a Windows Help file version, and various fans have taken photographs of experiences from Liff, in that there Flickr group. Fans have also compiled their own lists of meanings paired with useless place names, making for Liff ever-lasting. There's also an entry in The Salmon of Doubt that talks about the origins of Liff (Google Books, also on some weird sites that grabbed a bunch of the text but didn't really bother with formatting). New Yorkers have always been seen as fast-talking and rude. [NYTimes] Yes, it goes way back to Manhattan's very beginning. Pre-revolutionary governors were part of it. In 1774 Thomas Adams wrote "There is no modesty, no attention to one another. They talk very loud, very fast and altogether." The article also quotes Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.

Sam Adams, the recently elected openly gay mayor of Portland, Oregon, has come under fire for lying about a relationship he had with a teenage legislative intern in 2005 named Beau Breedlove. When first asked about the relationship in 2007 during the election campaign, Sam (then 42) claimed he was being a mentor to the young man. Sam recently cut short a trip to DC to return to Portland to publicly apologize and control damage over a new article in which he admits to having a sexual relationship with Beau. It's got the town divided over whether he should resign of if the whole thing is being blown out of proportion.

No, not Pugsly. If you are watching the miniseries on HBO but still haven't gotten your fill of the Adams Family, consider reading John Quincy Adams' brilliant diaries. You can browse selected topics and read, in his own handwriting, J.Q. Adams' insights ranging from slavery, to the Monroe Doctrine (which he formulated), to becoming Secretary of State, to his reaction to the news of his father's death. Although his single-term presidency was considered to be a failure, (you can read his sole inaugural address here), he subsequently distinguished himself as a U.S. Congressman by railing against slavery (and argued the Amistad case before the Supreme Court). Considered by some diplomatic historians to be the greatest Secretary of State in US history, he was astonishingly well educated: he wrote a Report on Weights and Measures, urging Congress to adopt a uniform system of weights and measures, and praised France's nascent metric system; he delivered lectures on Astronomy, he was First Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard College (read some of his orations here); and was one of only two American presidents to publish verse: his epic poem Dermot MacMorrogh, The Conquest of Ireland is available online here. Find a Death reports a double whammy, as June sees the deaths of Imogen Claire (a Transylvanian) and Jonathan Adams (Dr. Von Scott), both known for their appearances in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. If miss them that badly, you still have a chance to see them on screen at midnight, once and a while. They've been immortalized on screen, and maybe will be in screams, too.
