Alan Moore's Unearthing, a story of ancient London and Steve Moore

For your listening pleasure: Unearthing, an audio project by Alan Moore, with musical accompaniment from a "rock supergroup," to tell a vivid story of Shooter's Hill and one of its residents, Steve Moore (not related to Alan, but a long-time friend). Alan Moore's story came about with a pitch from a pulp paperback house to Iain Sinclair. The publisher was looking for a compiled London book, but once Sinclair got thinking on it, he decided it had to be more interesting than digging up old stories. Sinclair gathered and works from 59 authors, with many excellent contributions as well as inevitable omissions. The anthology was titled London: City of Disappearances, and Moore wrote on the history of an area, as well as a man, in the novella titled Unearthing. According to a Book Court review, Moore's contribution was "the most outstanding fiction in the whole book." That anthology came out in 2006, and in 2010, there was the audio collaboration between Alan Moore and Crook&Flail, the duo of Fog's Andrew Broder and Adam Drucker, better known as abstract rapper Doseone, with additional contributions by Mike Patton, Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite, Jesu/Godflesh frontman Justin Broadrick, and prolific drum-wrecker Zach Hill, of Hella and other bands. Moore also performed parts of the story live. Both the studio recording and the live shows recalled Alan Moore's earliest performances, when he read poetry as a teenager, as discussed in an interview with Wired. Most recently, the story was published as a (photo)graphic story, featuring photography by Mitch Jenkins. Some of the photos were included in the deluxe edition of the audio story.

In 1977 Dial Press of New York published Robert Mayer’s first novel, Superfolks. It was, amongst other things, a story of a middle-aged man coming to terms with his life, an enormous collection of 1970s pop-culture references, some now lost to the mists of time, and a satire on certain aspects of the comic superhero, but would probably be largely unheard of these days if it wasn’t for the fact that it is regularly mentioned for its supposed influence on a young Alan Moore and his work, particularly on Watchmen, Marvelman, and his Superman story, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? Hellblazer, the DC/Vertigo comic starring Alan Moore created occult investigator John Constantine, is being cancelled at issue #300 to make way for a new comic set in DC's New 52 universe. Hellblazer was DC's longest running continuously numbered comic and it's cancelation marks the last of the DC Comics characters with Vertigo titles being taken back into the mainstream DC universe (previously). Vertigo was originally an imprint for mature readers occult themed titles and creator owned work, though it has changed over the years with an adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo becoming the first Vertigo to receive TV advertising.

He released five albums of spoken word performance pieces (a few of which have tracks available on youtube): The Birth Caul (1996) (1, 2, 3, 4) - with music by David J and Tim Perkins The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels (1996) - with music by David J and Tim Perkins The Highbury Working: A Beat Seance (2001) (1, 2) - with David J and Tim Perkins Angel Passage (2002) (1) - with Tim Perkins, Jah Wobble and Billy Bragg Snakes and Ladders (2003) (1) - with Tim Perkins He also released the song You are My Asylum (2009) with Downtown Joe Brown and the Retro Spankees, which came on a free CD with an edition of Dodgem Logic.

Decompressed is a podcast in which comics writer and former Rock Paper Shotgun journalist Kieron Gillen (X-Men, Thor, Phonogram) talks to artists and writers about the process involved in writing a single issue of a comic. Decompressed 6 broke format and is instead a discussion with Mark Waid and Matt Fraction about scripting comics using the "Marvel Method", or "plot first" - in which the artist draws the comic from a story outline and dialogue is added later, rather than the writer supplying a panel by panel script. For a while out of favour even at Marvel, the method is seeing a resurgance. The podcast page contains visual aids, and embedded version of the podcast, the script of DEFENDERS #9 complete with B&W art and additional links, including links to Warren Ellis’ 3-part tutorial on writing comics (1, 2, 3). On The Avengers and Creator's Rights

So The Avengers is a very successful movie. This has lead many comics fans to express their concern over the treatment of original creators in the industry, specifically of Jack Kirby. Creators' Rights controversy is nothing new, and there remains to this day ample reason to question the business dealings of The Big Two when it comes to how they compensate the men and women who work for/with them. Alan Moore has been and continues to be the victim of numerous shady deals at the hands of DC comics. But no one, with the possible exception of Seigel and Shuster, has suffered more than Jack "King" Kirby. Ultimately, many longtime fans have asked "Why should I help Marvel make billions off of The Avengers when none of it will go to Kirby's estate?" Scott Kurtz, creator of PVPonline, asked fans to give up the fight for Kirby's estate and see the movie, citing the work of everyone who contributed to the characters since Jack helped create them as reason enough to support the film's release. Mefi's own mightygodking disagreed strongly, and has since supplemented his original post with links to other prominent pieces in support of Kirby's legacy. No one denies that King, and Alan Moore among many others, was cheated and denied compensation for his work. The question seems to be, with comics franchises becoming media juggernauts worldwide and moving outside of traditional comics fandom, do fans have the ability to advocate successfully for the rights of the people that started it all?

28 pages from DC's upcoming "New 52: 2nd Wave" Stretching the definition of "leaked" to the screaming limit, Buzzfeed shares photographs it was invited to take of 28 pages from DC's upcoming "New 52: 2nd Wave" - the six series being brought in to replace its six cancelled comic books. The same process occurred with 21 pages from issues of Before Watchmen, the controversial range of prequels to Alan Moore's Watchmen. The new titles include a return for Grant Morrison's Batman Incorporated and, perhaps most interestingly, the debut of science fiction novelist and Clarke award perennial China Miéville (previously) in a reboot of Dial H for Hero. Also previously: Miéville's "rejected pitch" for Scrap Iron Man, a comic book hero-by-committee dedicated to taking down Iron Man, the beacon of capitalist selfishness.

The crew take their places at the controls. Dan puts on the battered welding helmet that disguises his identity and, in a burst of rust, launches into the sky for New York, to face down the sociopathic authoritarian fascist arms-dealing corporate billionaire responsible for so many countless deaths, in the US and around the world: Tony fucking Stark.

"iZombie will be the last time I’ll ever write for DC... I decided quite some time ago, but waited until after the cancellation of my book was announced to discuss it. The short version is, I don’t agree with the way they treat other creators and their general business practices." writer Chris Roberson ends his relationship with DC Comics, pointing at a post by David Brothers as a summation of his ethical concerns. Roberson's work at DC has included turning around Superman after J. Michael Straczynski left mid-story, iZombie and a spin-offs from Vertigo's Fables featuring Cinderella as a super spy. He is currently working on the creator owned Memorial, published by IDW.

DC announced this morning that it would publish a series of prequels to Watchmen. Watchmen writer Alan Moore: “I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago.” The talent working on the new series has been quick to issue a defense and to outline their plans. The would-be Watchmen sequel was recently on the blue. Possibly unrelated: The Simpsons' Watchmen Babies.

Colonel Sebastian Moran is a colonial cad, who appears in the Adventure of the Empty House, the story in which Holmes returned. Together the commit crime. Kim Newman talks about Professor Moriarty: Hound of the D’Ubervilles, his novel in which they star as a reverse Holmes and Watson (review here), and lists his 10 best villains in literature. Previous team ups of the diabolical duo include the movie Silver Blaze / Murder at the Baskervilles (youtube), which features Ian Fleming as Dr. Watson, (not THE Ian Fleming), and Neil Gaiman's A study in Emerald (pdf) (Previously), as well as a brief appearance together in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Alan Moore and Ian Gibson's epic story The Ballad of Halo Jones concluded 25 years ago today (bar the odd strange one page appearance hinting at why it did not return). Despite being unpopular with readers at first due to it's female protagonist and relative lack of action it is now rightly regarded as one of 2000ads classic stories. However despite Quality Comics reprinting a color monthly version (which was anything but quality) it has remained a rarity in the US, until now. But how would the other 6 chapters of the planned 9 part chapter have gone? Moore revealed how it would have ended in a recent interview.
