10k Apart — Fond memories of the 5K Awards resurface with this modern spin on the idea. It’s time to get back to basics — back to optimizing every little byte like your life depends on it. Your challenge? Build a web app in less than 10 kilobytes.

"Web professionals are often expected to be “always on”—always working, absorbing information, and honing new skills. Unless our work and personal lives are carefully balanced, however, the physical and mental effects of an "always on" life can be debilitating." Burnout: Running On Empty [more inside]

It slipped through the cracks on my radar, but apparently the
IE8 team has met with some
web standards gurus and decided that in order to move forward with full standards compliance (and support the known quirks of IE6/7 for corporate intranets), a new "version targeting" system should be put in place. Other
browser vendors are not amused. Should IE
just give up? [more inside]

Dev Articles is the latest in a line of thieves who steal from free publications such as
A List Apart,
Digital-Web and
Boxes and Arrows to pilfer content and make a buck off of other folks' generous efforts. What is wrong with these folks? Dev Articles at least credits the authors (without letting them know... even that their stolen photo is up) but not the publication that provided the edits, formatting and forum to make the article real. And they make the advertising buck.
This month alone
Nick Finck has had to stop
Morpheous from their theft of
7 of his articles (and they claimed authorship!) What is wrong with people?

Oh great another "weblogs are stupid and they all suck" article came out, but what I really want to know is: why does
the other article running this week at
ALA acknowledge that "99% of everything is crap," but the weblog article doesn't? Comparing the cruft at the bottom of weblogs with the 1% best of writers (Ginsberg and Kerouac) seems unfair and pointless. And where are the solutions? Tell everyone to stop? Tell them to write better? What's so hard about ignoring the sites you don't like instead (I do that with most advertising)?

A List Apart announced the winners of their design contest. There were no surprises here, when I first heard about the contest, there was one site that came to mind, and they won the grand prize. I was kind of surprised that I had seen all the award winning sites before in my own travels, but hadn't explored much of them. Especially
Eneri.net, I had found it a couple months ago, but couldn't handle the long intros and preloads, it seemed grossly overdesigned and I left after seeing two pages and haven't been back since.
