1986 Mac Plus vs. 2007 AMD Dual Core "When we compare strictly common, everyday, basic user tasks between the Mac Plus and the AMD we find remarkable similarities in overall speed, thus it can be stated that for the majority of simple office uses, the massive advances in technology in the past two decades have brought zero advance in productivity." Factor in the internet, and the technological advances have brought me negative productivity.

Ever wondered where your laptop's parts come from, what it's made of, or what toxins are in it?

Just a bit ago, there was a crowd of about 2,000 in downtown Seattle chanting "AMD! AMD!" People will do anything for the chance at free processors. It was seriously a spectacle, and a marketing department's wet dream. Who knew you could get 2,000 nerds to show up at 5-6am and stand around in the cold for two hours, and have them still be in good enough spirits to chant your brand name in response to the question "Who do you love?" (Of course, I might be less cynical about it if they'd just called number 4495.) Were any other MeFi peeps out there? Someone should post pictures. It was really kind of surreal.

Sen. Biden may scotch missile defense. Didn't see any mention of this on the main American news sites I checked, as they celebrate Bush's recent policy triumphs in Congress and wink at his fleeing for his ranch for a month. Even stories about his future challenges don't refer to this, which seems important to me. You can bet the rest of the world is more interested in this story.

Dell takes a survey out on AMD processors. Finally, the only thing that keeps me from buying a Dell is their lack of Athlon and Duron machines. Sounds like the negative reviews of the P4 has Dell running towards the competition.

Athlon + DDR: Bert McComas is a very highly respected analyst of the CPU and memory industry, and I always read his articles with great interest.
Intel has announced that they don't expect the P4 to be a significant part of their business until late 2001. According to McComas, if they don't change that plan, AMD is going to eat them for lunch, because the P3 is no longer competitive. The performance/price ratio for the new AMD stuff has to be seen to be believed. I think Intel is in major trouble, because informal reports are that a 1.5GHz P4 is about the same power as a 900 MHz P3.[more>

The Athlon 1.1G Processor is due out this summer. I'm sure I'll need it to run my 36GB hard drives and my 140GB CDROM, but it's still a bit of a shock considering that only a few years ago I decided to splurge and get a cutting edge 486-66(MHz) with a 170MB hard drive I knew I'd never fill it up.
