"a staggering work of talent and attention to detail"

From episode five, season two of Hibike! Euphonium, Kyoto Animation presents Kitauji High School Concert Band's performance of Crescent Moon Dance, with the explanation on how they got the technical details almost entirely right while still leaving the overall performance on a level to be expected from a talented high school band. What's So Gay About Yuri!!! on Ice?

Just five episodes into its run, Yuri!!! on Ice has caught fire as a standout production that just so happens to be irrepressibly gay in subject matter, bolstered by the enthusiasm of squealing fangirls and LGBT otaku alike. [..] What makes Yuri!!! on Ice any different from the heaps of anime packed with various flavors of homoeroticism that we get with every new season anyway?
Jacob Hope Chapman examines the long history of gay subtext and queerbaiting in anime and why Yuri!!! on Ice looks to be different. (For a start the current world champion figure skating approves.)

"Anime fandom has a cultural resistance to critique"

I have a lot of friends who used to watch anime but don’t anymore, partly because, like me, it became too hard to seek out anime that treated women well. There are also lots of people who are enthusiastic about other geek properties but won’t touch anime because of its reputation of infantilizing women and sexualizing children. It makes it hard to recommend anime to people who aren’t already fans.

Battery is a really, really bad sport anime.

This is not bait. This is not subtle. This is there to be recognized by people who know what they're looking for. A deliberate hand put this together, and it's all part of the much bigger overall theme. Battery is about self-discovery and societal oppression by way of growing up gay in Japan.
Redditor TheHaruWhoCanRead shows why the recently concluded baseball anime Battery might be more than meets the eye. Note: spoilers. [more inside]

Guaranteed to feature a basset hound somewhere

Top Ten Mamoru Oshii Films (that Are not Ghost in the Shell): does what it says on the tin, ten movies, animated and live action, which were directed by Mamoru Oshii, all of which probably offer better entertainment than the Hollywood adaptation of Ghost in the Shell could.

The Major's Body

The Major, or Motoko Kusanagi, is the protagonist of each incarnation of the Ghost in the Shell manga-anime-merchadise franchise. If you care to google, Motoko Kusanagi is autocompletes to “a man” and “is hot,” then “in bed with a boy” and “in bed.” For a science-fiction philosophy character named for her military position, we (the audience — although I don’t limit this to those who have experienced the fiction, as the Major is iconic) sure are caught up in thinking about her gender and sexual status. Why could that be?
In a still ongoing series, Claire Napier looks at the Major's body throughout the various Ghost in the Shell mangas and anime series. NSFW, some spoilers. [more inside]
