Toilet training isn't quite so easy in Japan. There's squat toilets and western style to consider. Then there are the talking toilets, and toilets that act as electronic bidets. It's no wonder then, that Japanese kids need more than a few hints from mum to master lavatorial etiquette. Meet Pants Pankuro and his friends, in their efforts to master the strange world of the Japanese toilet. Mind you, Pants doesn't have the market all to himself. He's got opposition in the form of Shimajiru, but for my money, the tiger's work just isn't a patch on that of Mr. Pankuro.

Inglourious Basterds looks promisingly offensive, but it certainly doesn't appear to be the most offensive thing that could possibly be written as a comedy about World War II. No, for that, you'd have to have -- no, not Jerry Lewis, that won't do. Say it was based on a comic that was originally a webcomic. Say it was produced in one of the former Axis countries. And that it featured all of the major players as anthropomorphized stereotypes of those countries. And that these stereotypes were all young, attractive men who spent a lot of time with each other. Call it "Useless Italy" -- or, in Japanese, Hetalia: Axis Powers. (Actually, it can be pretty funny; I am not one to merely LOLJAPAN, but I laughed at these. And at least the kids are getting interested in history, right? [NSFW text.] See also: Afuganisu-tan.)

The global economic crisis claims another industry - anime voice actors, or seiyu. In a country that produces 60% of the world's animation, competition has always been fierce, but the rewards can be great, as seiyu sometimes achieve national fame, and are lauded with awards. The fame does come with a price, though: Female seiyu have fallen prey to stalkers, and male seiyu face the wrath of their fans should they dare marry. And for most seiyu, life isn't at all glamorous. It's estimated that 80% need to take on part-time jobs (at McDonald's, for example), or do voice acting for hentai; pornographic anime, in order to make ends meet. The fact is, the industry is glutted, and being a seiyu is no easy life.

M. Night Shyamalan has decided to cast white actors in the main roles of the upcoming motion picture based on the TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender. The problem: Avatar featured an Asian world with Asian characters, including Aang, the titular character, and his friends Sokka and Katara. Some people are pissed, pointing to other instances of whitewashing. There's a letter writing campaign and a Facebook group. Bingo anyone?

Cowboy Reeves: The Movie

Keanu Reeves is looking to create a live-action Cowboy Bebop movie with Erwin Stoff, and he wants the role of Spike Spiegel. (via io9)

The flick is currently being put together by Erwin Stoff, a producer who has spent the last two decades working almost exclusively on Reeves projects, and recently set the film up at 20th Century Fox. “We’ve got the rights, we’ve got a writer,” Keanu explained. “He’s putting together a scene outline.” Reeves revealed that this outline for the flick is currently focusing on the origins of the fictional “Bebop” drug developed by the military, which provides its users with a brief surge of superhuman reflexes and awareness. “We’re taking the Red Eye [story], the beginning part of the series,” he explained, “and then we’ll deal with the end of the series. We’re trying to figure out [the time frame]. We’re looking at the story right now.”

The series is 26 episodes plus a movie, which aren't always linear in progress, so there's quite of space for the film to fit into this universe. A lot of the mood is created by the music of Yoko Kanno, but there's no mention of music by any but the fans yet.

Akira on blu-ray

20 years after its cinematic debut, Akira is being released on bluray. Now would probably be a good time to do the following: Visit the official site (in Japanese). Watch the documentary (Part 1 of 5, youtube, English dub, Spanish subs) and learn, among other things, about the record-breaking colour palette that was created for the film and the intricate storyboarding process that Katsuhiro Otomo went through for the production. Read the manga (and then buy it!). Listen to the soundtrack by Geinoh Yamashirogumi (in Japanese). (buy it too!) Visit the fan sites. (previously on metafilter.) Fear the soon-to-be-release live action remake. Apologies for the copyright infringements. Excise as felt necessary.

First it was hostess bars, then host bars, then maid/anime cafes, and now this. Where will the madness end? (Note: this idea isn't entirely new in Japan. わんわんァンド (wan-wan rando) does this as sort of a day thing with being able to play with dog.
