Microsoft vs. AOL Gee, who do you root for in this one? Personally, I'd love to see a Pay-Per-View kickboxing match between Steve Case and Bill Gates.

Death in threes? Jonno pointed it out about six weeks ago, and I thought to myself that he was right. But man, the deaths are coming thick and fast now. The score, for those of us playing along at home, is: Musicians' deaths, 3 (
John Lee Hooker, Chet Atkins and
Joe Henderson), actors' deaths: 2 (
Carroll O'Connor, Jack Lemmon) and Net folks' deaths, 2 (
Jim Ellis and
Michael Hauben. (Boozoo Chavis' passing, noted by
fooljay, could be totted up in the musicians' column as well. Anthony Quinn and Joan Sims could go in the actors' column, if (like
harrycaul and
wackybrit, you were so inclined.)

AOL's walled garden. Anyone who doesnt think that AOL will only link to AOL/Time Warner properties in the broadband future is fooling themselves.

"No Senate Race in New York in 2000." I was at the
my AOL page and from there, two-clicked my way to their
election 2000 link to find my local races; where I was greeted with the aforementioned quote, in red. At first I thought it was a reference to the New York State Senate. But the top of the page clearly says, "U.S. Senate Race."
Am I the only person being duped by the AOL election information services?

Loudon Cty needs an AOL detective (via WP.com)
Confirming my suspicions that AOL users are all criminals. It seems that the only thing about AOl I hear nowadays is this-or-that criminal, or this-or-that victim, a.k.a. "sexiecxique129" or "discostude09" in the AOL chatrooms, was brutally defrauded of identity by someone calling themselves "When_This_Story_Breaks_Everyone_will_Judge_me_by_my_ridiculous_AOL_Handle56171:)"

Love those open
instant messaging standards.
Rather than use their own servers or a decentralized approach,
Aimster offers peer to peer file sharing services by using the existing AOL and Microsoft Networking infrastructures.

AOL's Netscape division is being sued by an NJ photographer over their SmartDownload feature, which allegedly allows surveillance of activity between websites and you. He claims "[SmartDownload] secretly transmits to Netscape the file name and location, along with an identification string unique to that Internet user.''
"...we've never used or accessed any information about SmartDownload users or files..." - AOL

Maybe I should learn VB or whatever's required to make a browser widget that blinks whenever I'm at a site owned by
AOL/
TimeWarner. There are tons of them, and I bet the thing would be blinking all the time, what with all the wholly owned subsidiaries of this and that. Of course, it would be built on an open architecture, so we could add Microsoft (where's their list?), and anyone else that needs watching.

Dontcha hate it when something like
Winamp gets bought out by AOL? It crashes a bit too much on my home system so I went looking for alternatives and was glad when I found
FreeAMP (it's GPL'ed to boot!). Take the high road, use the mp3 player that guarantees no AOL buyouts on your desktop.
