Crankies

“We did our first show in a bar...all of a sudden, the whole room was quiet. And then we got everyone to sit on the floor cross-legged to watch our crankies.” Storytelling and song with hand-cranked panoramas were once common entertainments - early motion pictures. Some can still be seen: Pilgrim's Progress at the Saco Museum in Maine, or Whaling Voyage 'Round the World at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. They're being rediscovered for their strangely compelling magic by today's artists and musicians. More crankies can be found at these links, along with some information about making them.

Sounds & Spaces 001

“When I was doing my Post-Doc at UCL I used to go to the British Museum to relax, and work in the beautiful library there, so I chose the space for the mix. I wanted to capture the ambient atmosphere in the central courtyard, so I did some binaural recording to include in the mix. I also wanted to make the mix something of an exploration through history and ideas in line with the contents of the museum, so I brought in lots of disparate music spanning the centuries and continents. I also mixed it in a way to be like a journey though the museum, turning corners and regularly coming across something totally different and unexpected, with each track being like a different exhibit. Hence the name of the mix, in that, each piece of music almost has a visual content.” -- Max Cooper & The British Museum Tracklisting:

The Trans 100 is a list curated by We Happy Trans based on nominations of 100 key trans people breaking ground in American culture, arts, social justice, and politics. Autostraddle provides more information on the 51 trans women on the list, and Dyssonance, one of the curators of the list, talks about the deliberate focus on American trans people for this iteration as well as support for international-based lists.

You keep doing your work, because you have to, because it's your calling... one does their work for the people. And the more people you can touch, the more wonderful it is...

Patti Smith's Advice to the young but it's not all wonderful.

To be a human being in these times, it's all difficult. You have to go through life, trying to stay healthy. Be as happy as you can. And doing what you want.... and understand that it's going to be hard. Because life is really difficult...

Circlesquare is a band that I like. They have kind of a post-punk meets dance music feel to them, and if you like those things you might like them too. I like their songs Hey You Guys, Dancers, and Timely. The man behind the music, Jeremy Shaw, does some interesting art projects, like "DMT", "7 Minutes", and "Representative Measurements", which his site won't let me link. He did an interview with Interview Magazine.

Wesley Willis (1963-2003) was a performer and visual artist involved in the independent music scene of late-'90s Chicago. A character named Milan, with very similar appearance and mannerisms to Willis', is featured in recent issues of Wonder Woman under DC's "New 52" marque.

Olivier Messiaen's "Vingt regards sur l'enfant-Jésus"

To say that Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur L'Enfant-Jesus (Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus) is a masterpiece is a gross understatement. Over sixty years after its composition, it has rightfully earned the recognition of being one of the most important piano works of the 20th century. ... [It] is one of the most personal and intimate pieces Messiaen ever wrote, and it gives the listener a close look at Messiaen the person. Messiaen was a deeply religious person, and although his faith influenced every single piece he wrote, the Vingt Regards is almost like his own personal spiritual diary. - Keith Kerchoff My kind of Christmas music:

I. Regard du Père ("Contemplation of the Father")

II. Regard de l'étoile ("Contemplation of the star")

III. L'échange ("The exchange")

IV. Regard de la Vierge ("Contemplation of the Virgin")

V. Regard du Fils sur le Fils ("Contemplation of the Son upon the Son")

The Pierre-Laurent Aimard performance in these clips seems to be the consensus recommendation - and can be found online in FLAC.

Amy Winehouse - SWR3 New Pop Festival, Baden-Baden, September 18, 2004

Four days after her 21st birthday, Amy Winehouse sang at the SWR3 New Pop Festival in Baden-Baden. It's just my music. It's the only thing I have real dignity in in my life. That's the one area in my life where I can hold my head up and say, "No one can touch me."

Led Zeppelin - Royal Albert Hall, January 9, 1970

Led Zeppelin - Royal Albert Hall, January 9, 1970 (previously) Their current two-hour plus act is a blitzkrieg of musically-perfected hard rock that combines heavy dramatics with lashings of sex into a formula that can’t fail to move the senses and limbs. At the pace they’ve been setting on their current seven-town British tour there are few groups who could live with them on stage. - Nick Logan

Of the many bootleg versions of this concert, the best is perhaps the Winston Remasters in FLAC. Links are available.

So dig this big crux

Minutemen's Mike Watt interviewed about Double Nickels on the Dime. This soundboard recording of the March 1, 1985 concert at The Stone in San Francisco reminds me of Robert Christgau's review of Ballot Result:

As someone who's never had much patience with the mystique of the ill-recorded moment, music overheard just before it slips into the historical void its creators figure it for, I'll make a partial exception for the Minutemen, because I miss them so much. I know most of the songs on this mostly live double in versions I prefer, but better than any studio distillation it underlines the crucial point: they lived. And given the modesty so intrinsic to their world-historical public ambitions, its muffled, take-a-flier intimacy speaks. Also, I like the covers.
