And then we got everyone to sit on the floor cross-legged to watch our crankies.” Storytelling and song with hand-cranked panoramas were once common entertainments - early motion pictures. “When I was doing my Post-Doc at UCL I used to go to the British Museum to relax, and work in the beautiful library there, so I chose the space for the mix. I wanted to capture the ambient atmosphere in the central courtyard, so I did some binaural recording to include in the mix. I also wanted to make the mix something of an exploration through history and ideas in line with the contents of the museum, so I brought in lots of disparate music spanning the centuries and continents. I also mixed it in a way to be like a journey though the museum, turning corners and regularly coming across something totally different and unexpected, with each track being like a different exhibit. After years of silence, enigmatic programmer/musician/surrealist why the lucky stiff is publishing to the web again (temporarily). Five days ago he released a number of short collages; today, his site is outputting a number of stories and essays, which are being collected in several Scribd repositories. _why writes about a strange old Oprah show starring guests who've removed themselves from society [parts 2 3 4 5 6], discussing M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening with a friend [2 3 4 5 6], and suffering a personal crisis after reading the complete works of Kafka [2 3 4 5 6 7]. (One final story, "Dentist", has been uploaded to a public Dropbox account [2 3 4 5 6 7 8].) There's also this somewhat ominous web site. In the past, _why wrote a poignant guide to Ruby, created some music that sounds kind of Neutral Milk Hotel in its mixture of quirk and melancholy, made a philosophy one time just for fun, and also wrote a bunch of poems and poems and stories and stories. His complete estate has been archived, to some extent, here.

Circlesquare is a band that I like. They have kind of a post-punk meets dance music feel to them, and if you like those things you might like them too. I like their songs Hey You Guys, Dancers, and Timely. The man behind the music, Jeremy Shaw, does some interesting art projects, like "DMT", "7 Minutes", and "Representative Measurements", which his site won't let me link. He did an interview with Interview Magazine.

Wesley Willis (1963-2003) was a performer and visual artist involved in the independent music scene of late-'90s Chicago. To say that Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur L'Enfant-Jesus (Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus) is a masterpiece is a gross understatement. Over sixty years after its composition, it has rightfully earned the recognition of being one of the most important piano works of the 20th century. ... [It] is one of the most personal and intimate pieces Messiaen ever wrote, and it gives the listener a close look at Messiaen the person. Messiaen was a deeply religious person, and although his faith influenced every single piece he wrote, the Vingt Regards is almost like his own personal spiritual diary. - Keith Kerchoff My kind of Christmas music: I. Regard du Père ("Contemplation of the Father") II. Regard de l'étoile ("Contemplation of the star") III. L'échange ("The exchange") IV. Regard de la Vierge ("Contemplation of the Virgin") V. Minutemen's Mike Watt interviewed about Double Nickels on the Dime. This soundboard recording of the March 1, 1985 concert at The Stone in San Francisco reminds me of Robert Christgau's review of Ballot Result:

As someone who's never had much patience with the mystique of the ill-recorded moment, music overheard just before it slips into the historical void its creators figure it for, I'll make a partial exception for the Minutemen, because I miss them so much. I know most of the songs on this mostly live double in versions I prefer, but better than any studio distillation it underlines the crucial point: they lived. And given the modesty so intrinsic to their world-historical public ambitions, its muffled, take-a-flier intimacy speaks. Also, I like the covers.
