Rhode Island is about to vote to become the 10th state (and last state in New England) to enact marriage equality with the unanimous support of the State Senate Republicans. In March, Rhode Island's governor, Lincoln Chafee, published this op-ed in the Providence Journal, endorsing marriage for all couples. The bill has already passed the House, and will head for the governor's desk. A proposed amendment to allow for a referendum vote in the fall failed, 10-28. Said Senator Crowley:"This won't change my life one bit.. but it will change the lives of so many people [who want to marry]" The new marriage equality bill follows after at least nine years of hard work by organizations such as RI United for Marriage and GLAD. A marriage equality bill has been introduced in RI every year since 1997. Look for Delaware to be next.

Following an incident at Fort Bragg where Lt. Colonel Heather Mack's wife, Ashley Broadway, was told she could not join the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses, the Marine Corps has issued guidance that spouses clubs operating on its bases and installations must offer membership to the same-sex spouses of gay and lesbian service members. While the Defense Department has not issued similar guidance covering all service branches, and for now is taking the stance that the Fort Bragg spouses club is conforming with the existing rules because the non-discrimination clause does not extend to sexual orientation, the Marine Corps memo makes it clear that they are judging this issue as one of sex discrimination. "We would interpret a spouses club's decision to exclude a same-sex spouse as sexual discrimination because the exclusion was based upon the spouse's sex," the memo said.

Lego has announced it will release a Back to the Future Delorean next year The design was supplied through their Cuusoo system, a user submission based program where fan created kits that garner more than 10,000 likes go to their approval board for review. Previous kits created through this system include the Minecraft kits, the Japanese Satellite Hayabusa and the Shinkai 6500, a manned research submersible.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of the original Mega Man, a series-spawning platformer-shooter starring a blue robot with a gun for a hand who traverses dangerous levels and defeats robot bosses, gaining a new weapon with each boss he defeats. In celebration, Capcom has officially released a fan game, Street Fighter x Mega Man, with the Street Fighter cast (who made their own debut twenty five years ago in August) taking the role of the bosses. Researchers sneak up on sleeping sperm whales (.mpg video, hosted by Current Biology.) Matt Kaplan, writing in Nature, summarizes a 2008 article in Current Biology: "An accidental encounter with a pod of sleeping sperm whales has opened researchers’ eyes to some unknown sleep behaviours of these giant sea creatures . . . A team led by Luke Rendell at the University of St Andrew’s, UK, were monitoring calls and behaviour in sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) off the northern Chile coast when they accidentally drifted into the middle of a pod of whales hanging vertically in the water, their noses poking out of the surface. At least two of the whales were facing the boat, but not a single animal responded." And there is this extraordinary photo of this phenomenon (not the same encounter, but it's a beautiful photo, by Magnus Lundgren for Wild Wonders of Europe). "Stereotypical resting behavior of the sperm whale," by Patrick J.O. Miller, , Kagari Aoki, Luke E. Rendell, and Masao Amano. (Current Biology, Vol. 18/1, Jan. 2008.). If the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old, and Pangea split up only about 200 million years ago, what happened before then? I never knew that geologists could reconstruct the continents' movements from before Pangea. Not only that, but they can give us a preview of what comes next. Here's three possible ways the continents might be joined in 250 million years. In the big picture, researchers from U.C. Lancashire have just finished a model of the way the Milky Way Galaxy formed. A zany alternative to continental drift theory is what I call the Balloon Earth theory. (Just chuckle at the misguided earnestness of the video. Do not read the YouTube comments.)
