The new orchestra will achieve the most complex and novel aural emotions not by incorporating a succession of life-imitating noises but by manipulating fantastic juxtapositions of these varied tones and rhythms. Therefore an instrument will have to offer the possibility of tone changes and varying degrees of amplification.
In 1984, inspired by concepts outlined in The Art Of Noises, a 1913 Futurist manifesto by Luigi Russolo [HTML version, PDF pamphlet version] and new music technology , a musician, a audio engineer, a programmer, a producer, and a music journalist came together to form one of the most influential music collectives of all time. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present for you, a definitive look at the Art Of Noise. [more inside]

Benjamin Darvill, a.k.a. Son of Dave, is a one-man band of sorts, combining harmonica, vocals, beat-boxing, a rattle and foot-stomping to create his own infectious form of blues. Darvill, a Canadian formerly with Crash Test Dummies, has released four albums to date as Son of Dave, his latest and best being 'Shake A Bone', recorded and mixed by Steve Albini in Chicago, the title track used briefly in an episode of Breaking Bad. Hip hop is made of four elements: Deejaying and turntablism, Emceeing (rapping and freestyling), Breaking (more previously), and Graffiti. And don't forget beatboxing (more), which blends turntablism and emceeing. But what if you can't make the wikka-wikka sounds with your mouth? You could learn from others, or you could dust off your flute with Nathan Lee, or bust out your sousaphone with Nat McIntosh (formerly with Youngblood Brass Band (interviewed on NPR), now with Dallas Brass).

Beatboxing in France? Who knew? (warning: lots of YouTube coming up.) The Art of Noise had their Beat Box (and live) . It's all good and well but maybe this beatbox is just a bit more interesting. There's even a very well documented history behind it. The Fat Boys did it, Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh did it and we've already seen Super Mario Beatboxed with a flute. Roxorloops takes another turn. And even more French beatboxing.

Kid Beyond is a nifty vocal percussionist I just saw perform. Hear some tracks online [flash]. Try Kashmir. Think: one dude, a mic, and a delay pedal. If you live near Berkeley, you can learn beatbox from the kid himself at the JazzSchool on Sunday, November 7.

The Human Beatbox (Video). I meant this to be a follow-up to another previous thread about this specific ability, but the search page won't give me my results. At any rate, this guy amuses, entertains and scares the bejeezus out of me all at the same time. Good enough for me!

Check it out party people its the Human Beatbox! So you're hanging out with pals, and one of them starts throwing out the mad rhymes. You've got this incredible urge to back him up by creating wika-wika-wika noises just like the Fat Boys, but how? Learn how to here, and maybe someday, if you work hard enough... you'll be as good as "That Guy From Police Academy."
