German Brewers Say Fracking Will Mess Up the Country's Beer (via The Atlantic) Brewing the world's best hefeweizen, you see, requires great drinking water -- and fracking, they said, "could reduce or even completely eliminate the security of the water supply." In a letter (in German), the organization (Deutscher Brauer-Bund) argued that this newfangled way of extracting energy would conflict with Europe's oldest food purity law, the Reinheitsgebot of 1516.

Magic Hat Brewery is facing a ban in several Lexington, Kentucky establishments after a recent lawsuit against local business West Sixth Brewery. Many are dubious about the claims being made regarding copyright infringement. The Consumerist offers a visual guide to some of the potential similarities between the designs. West Sixth claims that they are experiencing corporate bullying and have asked the community to sign a petition and stop drinking Magic Hat, while Magic Hat argues that West Sixth has been less than straightforward with the public. West Sixth responds with further claims of corporate chicanery.

A heat map of your preferences over the beer space. Developer Kevin Jamieson writes, "Beer Mapper is a practical implementation of my Active Ranking work on an Apple iPad. The application presents a pair of beers, one pair at a time, from a list of beers that you have indicated you know or have access to and then asks you to select which one you prefer. After you have provided a number of answers, the application shows you a heat map of your preferences over the 'beer space.'" BeerMapper uses data from ratebeer.com and math that is way over my head to determine your preferences among the various beer styles. It is not yet ready for the App Store, but it looks very cool.

The BBC reports that "Beer drinkers in the US have filed a $5m (£3.3m) lawsuit accusing Anheuser-Busch of watering down its beer." The lawsuits are based on information from former employees at breweries owned by the multinational. Reuters: The plaintiffs in the lead lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco are Nina Giampaoli and John Elbert. Giampaoli for the past four years has bought a six-pack of Budweiser every week, the lawsuit said. Chicago Tribune: Ten Anheuser-Busch products were named in the lawsuits: Budweiser, Michelob, Michelob Ultra, Bud Ice, Bud Light Platinum, Hurricane High Gravity Lager, King Cobra, Busch Ice, Natural Ice and Bud Light Lime. CNN: The class-action lawsuit alleges that the maker of the "King of Beers" has the technology to precisely control the amount of alcohol in its beers but adds water so that the alcohol is well below the advertised figure of 5% by volume, the suit said. The Business Journal: In addition to $5 million in damages, the lawsuits are requesting a court order requiring Anheuser-Busch to fund a “corrective advertising campaign” to remedy its allegedly illegal conduct.

Winter storm "Nemo" is headed for New England, and weather experts are predicting more than two feet of snow in some areas. According to the National Weather Service in Taunton, Mass., in records dating to 1892, there have been only six snowstorms of 20 inches or more in Boston, topped by the Feb. 17-18, 2003 snowstorm (27.5") and the infamous "Blizzard of '78" (Feb. 6-7; 27.1"). Visiting Australia? There are just a few things you need to know when ordering a beer ... A pint's a pound the world around¹, but in an Australian pub it's 25% larger,² except in South Australia where it's what other States call a schooner and holds 15 (Imperial) fluid ounces. Schooners are the same everywhere (again, except in South Australia, where the measurement is called a pint) but this wasn't always the case. If you want a half pint you can order a pot everywhere except New South Wales and Western Australia, where it's a middy; South Australia, where it's called a schooner; and Western Australia, where ordering one will either get you a full pint or a strange look. And nobody knows why South Australians drink butchers. Anyway, here's a table to sort it all out for you. ¹ I.e., in the USA. ² I.e., an Imperial pint.
