MovableType, , the blogging software of choice (well, for a lot of us), have launched a new user-friendly service on their own servers, called TypePad (here's the press release). Is this a first direct hit at Blogger, a service they have denied gunning for, in light of Google's move? Will it work? My vote: Hell yes. MovableType have not put a foot wrong yet, and now they've got Anil Dash on board, the lucky tyke...

Evan Williams could not be reached for comment. "Evan Williams, Pyra's co-founder, blogged his day-to-day life for the last three years right up until it got interesting. Williams pulled his blog offline earlier this week." Leander Kahney at Wired asks Why Did Google Want Blogger? and thinks it might have something to do with that slippery idea of a semantic Web.

15 months after the first waves, Blogging seems to prove so popular among young Iranian boys and girls that now the number of Persian (or Farsi) weblogs has jumped to more than 9,000. Almost half of them are using Blogger.com's free service and other half are using a similar but more Persian-friendly online application, created by Iranian programmers, called Persianblog.com. Blogger sets up special search page. It displays posts mentioning "World Trade" or "terrorist." It's really something. It starts right at the very beginning. From the Blogger front page:

"'The need to connect is intense,' said Donna Hoffman, a professor who studies the Web and Web commerce at Vanderbilt University. 'While the network TV stations blather, the Internet carries the news and connects the masses in a true interactive sob.'" Indeed. Today was the most active posting day on Blogger ever—by over 22 percent.

Greymatter 1.2 For what it's worth, the notably talented Noah Grey has just recently released a new version of his weblogging software GreyMatter. I've been using GreyMatter for my personal weblog for a few weeks now: anyone feeling frustrated with server problems over at Blogger or just wishing for a little more control over their content might want to check it out. Let me tell you, it's a control-freak's dream program. And especially nice, it runs using Perl cgis on your own server, so there shouldn't ever be any accessibility problems. Noah is a great guy and really deserves more recognition for the wonderful job he's done on GreyMatter. Just thought I'd mention...

LiveJournal's "Paid Accounts" model might be the route that Pyra wants to take with Blogger. I don't know much about LiveJournal's features as compared with Blogger, but they certainly have thought out their revenue model. Does anyone know anything about LiveJournal?

Jason put up a link to the New Yorker article that mentions himself, Meg, Pyra, EV, etc. It also mentions MetaFilter and myself. I find this funny in a way, all of of these people that never would have known anything about each other are all interconnected. Why? Because Ev and Meg started Pyra. Because I read an article about the original Pyra app. Which led me to Blogger. Which led to Ev, Meg, Pb, MetaFilter... whcih led to Kottke, Haughey, etc. Ahhh the good old days
