No musician of Bud Powell’s era had such capacity for improvisatory excellence and was so ready to unleash it, instantly, in such concentrated form onstage. “They get away with murder,” [bassist Curly] Russell said of such geniuses. “When you see the beautiful side of them, and what they can produce, musically, you have to go along with them.” When Powell dug in at the keyboard and poured out seamless yet intricate solos, Russell said: “[A]ll was forgiven. It had to be. If you played music or you loved music—all is forgiven.” A good introduction is Verve's aptly titled Jazz Giant - which includes this dazzling performance of "Get Happy".

Freddie Hubbard 1938 - 2008

Freddie Hubbard passed away today. Freddie died at Sherman Oaks Hospital early this morning at 5:00am, we're still gathering the details, but he was in our studios most recently and to say this is upsetting in the community is an understatement. Freddie did in fact have a heart attack last month and we mourn his passing and remember one damn brilliant musician and simply wonderful fella. I love seeing a well established offline brand bring their image and experience to the web. Tonight, I stumbled upon Blue Note Records' site for the first time. Blue Note is famous for producing both wonderful jazz records and beautiful album artwork. The splash page shows a random artist and the graphics are reminiscent of their covers. They're even cool enough to offer live streaming music from their library, which sounds great over my cable modem (although it's done through windows media player).
