Sure the television broadcasts catch every angle of NASCAR wrecks. However, I think views from the grandstands offer a unique view of the thrill and danger of these events.

Fire always brings out the "whoos." Big wreck at the 2010 Nationwide series race at Talladega. Nothing like the exuberance of an amateur cameraman who captures that one big wreck he has dreamed of. 2010 Samsung 500 in Texas. A flying truck from this year's truck race at Daytona. Another view of Daytona truck wreck, coming right at you In May of 2011 Clint Bowyer almost flips during a Natiowide Series race. Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon were taken out late in a race by Clint Bowyer at Martinsville this year. The crowd rejoiced.

Many of us have probably built a spudgun (aka: potato cannon, spudchucker, potato launcher) before, most likely something along the lines of this basic model. Perhaps some of us have even built pneumatic cannons, or perhaps experimented with different fuels. The Spud Gun Technology center takes spudgun engineering to levels far beyond your wildest adolescent dreams. (Unless you went to this site as an adolescent. It's a true Web Classic.) Read on for a more about these tuber-launching funmakers and TSTC. Never built a spudgun before? Well, there are plenty of places on the web that will tell you how to build your own, whether you want to build a combustion powered launcher or the slightly less common pneumatic launcher. Of course, that might not be your first concern. Potato cannons offer a lot of bang for your buck, but there are certainly legal and safety issues that must be considered. You also might want to take more of an engineering approach, and the above-mentioned Spudgun Technology Center (charmingly Web 1.0 though it may be) certainly has you covered with a discussion of construction materials, ignition methods, and plenty of other considerations. They even have a store where you can buy advanced components like rifled barrels, custom valving, and ignitors. Fun for the whole family!

Remember Worms? Well, Funky Pear (the guys who made playing golf in space fun) has another version of that, but the worms are replaced with guys in space suits, and the landscape is now a small planetary system. Use gravity to sling your rockets around planets, and build up the damage multiplier. Play Gravitee Wars. Warning: addictive. Controls: arrows will move your current space guy around the planet, and WASD will zoom the map in and out. You cannot jump planets by yourself. Tip: if you can, go for a shot that will knock the other guy off and into space - this is usually better than whittling down his hit points. Also, when a guy dies, he blows up and can damage others next to him. Later levels add sniper rifles, tunneling rockets, shields, and land mines.

Friday Flash Fun: Nuclearoids. A little like Boomshine, a lot like dominoes. But with explosions. And bouncy balls. And colors. Lots of colors! Not too brain engaging, with particle attraction and even black holes. Tip: you do not have to click on a ball; your click pushes the balls away from the area, and the haze shows where they will go. I also recommend turning OFF the sound, it's rather "chiptuney".

V, Double dip (W) or L recession? Things look bad for the EURO is the skyscraper index is right. We have heard recently about problems in the Eurozone. Is the worst over or is the worst still to come? The skyscraper index indicates: Trouble ahead. The Skyscraper Index is a concept put forward in January 1999 by Andrew Lawrence, research director at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, which showed that the world's tallest buildings have risen on the eve of economic downturns. Business cycles and skyscraper construction correlate in such a way that investment in skyscrapers peaks when cyclical growth is exhausted and the economy is ready for recession. Lawrence used skyscraper projects as a predictor of economic crisis, not boom. * The first notable example was the Panic of 1907. Two record-breaking skyscrapers, the Singer Building and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, were launched in New York before the panic and completed in 1908 and 1909, respectively. Met Life remained the world's tallest building until 1913. * Another string of supertall towers - 40 Wall Street, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building - was launched shortly before to the Wall Street Crash of 1929. * The next record holders, World Trade Center towers and Sears Tower, opened up in 1973, during the 1973–1974 stock market crash and the 1973 oil crisis. * The last example available to Lawrence, Petronas Twin Towers, opened up in the wake of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and held the world height record for five years. Picture to visualize this. Since then: The Dubai Tower, the world largest building, opened 2010, during the major Dubai financial crisis. The European Central Bank Tower will be finished in 2014. If the skyscraper index is a good indicator then the Euro zone should have it biggest problems around 2014. Of cause the Austrians like the indicator since it is in accordance with their business cycle theory. 2 July, 1958 - 13 March 2007. The Stardust Hotel/Casino was reduced to dust (youtube) at 2:30 am this morning. Initially opened in 1958 as the first low-budget property on the strip (rooms cost $6 a night), it (and the Westward Ho nearby) has been demolished to make room for a 5,300 room $4B ultra-luxury resort named Echelon, currently the second most expensive property development in Nevada (behind Project City Center down the road). One of the few remaining remnants of old Vegas, it was mob-owned/operated until at least 1984 (when the gaming commission levied a $3M fine for skimming), and is probably best known as the setting for the mostly nonfiction book/movie Casino. Over the years, it could lay claim to having the largest casino, the longest pool, the most rooms (twice), the largest neon sign, the only drive-in theater, the largest fine ever levied by the gaming commission, and the most consecutive live performances by Wayne Newton. It was also one of the last properties on the strip to use the more expensive metal-centered gaming chips. Arrivederci.
