Fear and Loathing in New South Wales

What’s Rangoon To You Is Grafton To Me is a forty-five minute long radio play about a long, strange road trip from Brisbane to Sydney. (transcript) First broadcast in 1978 on Double Jay (now Triple J), it was written by Russell Guy (link) and starred news reader James Dibble (MBE) as its “whacked-out road warrior protagonist”. The piece has gone on to become something of a cult classic, and inspired a recent homage by broadcaster Mike Williams: A Kangaroo Has Three Ears

But who needs bears when you can see a platypus?

Do not return after an encounter. Australian magpies have an incredible memory (as with all members of the Corvid family, they are very intelligent) and will attack the same people again and again. It is also too bad if you happen to look like someone they attacked before. -- Thoughts on Australia fauna

Melbourne to Brisbane in six hours

Australia's federal Department of Infrastructure and Transport has released an initial report into the prospects of building a high-speed rail link joining the eastern states. The report (which may be found here) lists a number of potential corridors joining Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane, and gives the total cost of building the system at AUD100bn. The resulting system would allow journeys between Melbourne and Sydney (currently the world's fourth busiest air route) in just under three hours, and Sydney and Brisbane in a further three. Tickets between Melbourne and Sydney would be priced at AUD99 to AUD197, with Sydney-Brisbane tickets being slightly cheaper. [more inside]

The Battle of Brisbane

The United States and Australia have long shared a peaceful alliance, but it was not always so. In 1942, U.S servicemen and Australian soldiers fought openly and violently in what is known today as The Battle of Brisbane. [more inside]

Apparently "People like to watch and be watched...as long as it's done in a non-tacky way." Having sex at a giant dildo sale. How could that possibly be tacky?
