Butt (previously) interviews Didier Lestrade, former publisher of classic French gay zines and periodicals like Magazine (scanned archives) and Têtu. “Unlike many young fags today, we knew our gay history. We were learning all the time about all kinds of stuff and we were always eager to lean more…. It freaks me out to think how quickly we went from creating our own history to not caring about gay history anymore! It happened so fast. A kind of Hump Day manqué. Travis Matthews started out directing semi-explicit, often naked video interviews, shot in their own bedrooms, of the scruffy, impoverished, underexercised gay intellectuals who are a core readership of Butt magazine (previously; before that). Thus begat In Their Room (SFW), which “veers into the bedrooms of eight different men where you see them doing everything from the most banal to the most erotic.” Sounds like a smashing idea for a feature film in the “amateur porn” genre, does it not? After an open casting call for a guy willing to bottom, whom he duly found, Matthews has released a 20-minute trailer (definitely NSFW).

Beefcake boys... fully clothed. Bob Mizer of Athletic Model Guild fame – you may have seen the film Beefcake that dramatized his life – didn’t just shoot nudes. Sometimes his lads kept their clothes on. In the great tradition of hyperspecialized Internet “porn,” Butt magazine (previously) collects some examples of what you could call Mizer’s “chaste” portfolio.
