Walt reversed the formula, and found his first star.

Saturday morning cartoons were once a staple of American television, but by the year 2000 they had all but disappeared. Of course, the Internet never forgets. Case in point: Cartoon Network Video -- a free, searchable, ad-supported service that provides hundreds of full-length episodes of classic shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and The Powerpuff Girls, as well as current offerings and scads of shorter material. Too recent for you? Then give Kids WB Video a whirl -- it does the same thing with the same interface, but for older programs like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, The Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, Thundercats, and the original Space Ghost. If you're in the mood to learn (and don't mind some live-action), PBS Kids Video has educational fare such as Arthur, Wishbone, and Zoom. Freakazoid! tells the tale of a hyperactive teen super hero whose personality is a bit of Jerry Lewis, Chris Farley and Batman. The show ran for two seasons from September 9, 1995 to June 1, 1997, with Cartoon Network airing reruns until March 8, 2003, and is available in full, online (YouTube Playlist). The love for the show lives on, with an amateur movie adaptation, memories from the cast, and other bits of show history. The show was initially planned as more of a teenage superhero show, somewhat in the feel of Spiderman, but that changed as things were worked out. In an interview, Bruce Timm said "every time we'd have a meeting with Steven [Spielberg], the concept would kinda change, and it kept leaning more and more towards zany comedy." Some of that original superhero feel came from Mike Allred's Madman. In a Fanboy Radio podcast interview (jump to 1:37:30), Allred says Bruce Timms told him "they had issues of Madman open and were told, 'Do something like this.'" Meet detective Kyösti Pöysti from Pasila, a cult tv-series that relies on tight, absurd and idiosyncratic language and depressing the suspects until they give up. Now there are fan-made subtitles to introduce this gem to the english misspelling world. Reetta Ruusu, The Orphant Dogs, For and against, Key player and lots more in related videos. Notice that the subtitles have their own idiosyncrasies going on: dummy = pacifier.

Sam Kieth is an interesting guy, coming from an artistic family (including a cousin who created the animated series Cow and Chicken). His professional work has mostly been in the world of comics, though he did direct a movie for Roger Corman, entitled "Take it to the Limit" (2000), as a way "to recharge [his] batteries after the Maxx." The Maxx was a 35 issue comic (plus a few bonuses), and later animated and aired on Mtv's Oddities in the mid 1990s. (More videos inside) Only officially released in part on VHS, and now slowly re-appearing as fragments of the original episodes on MTV2 Legit, most of the 13 episodes can be found on YouTube. Bill Peet

Bill Peet (born Bill Peed) 1915-2002, was a Disney animator and children's book author. His work defined the Disney style, served as an inspiration for the movie Cars, and has amazed readers with the depth and expression of its characters. An exhibit of his work is running at the Art Institute of Chicago through May 24, 2009 (this Sunday). Peet worked at Disney for 27 years, where he was the only person to ever storyboard an entire film (and he did it twice, for The Sword and the Stone and 101 Dalmations). He was involved in ten films. Peet was also involved a number of shorts (all links youtube):

One short, Susie the Blue Coupe (1952) (Wikipedia), was "among the biggest design inspirations for" the Pixar movie Cars (pdf on Cars). The short deals with the selling into marriage, aging, abuse, alcoholism, and finally a happy ending (or deluded, dying hallucination) of a female car. The full 8 minute short can be seen here. Peet had numerous disagreements with Walt Disey, detailed in his sprawling and award winning autobiography (See What was Walt like? (scans from the autobiography) and a fascinating interview about Walt and other topics).

Peet left Disney and published his first book, Hubert's Hair-Raising Adventure, in 1959. He would go on to publish 36 books.

Peet published the first environmental book for children, Farewell to Shady Glade in 1966. In 1970 he published The Wump World (full low-quality book scan). (The Wump was based on the Capybara, large rodents which Peet was "ashamed to admit" he owned as a pet). Both books bear similarities to The Lorax by Dr. Suess, which was published a year later.

Peet was also involved in some of the most controversial of Disney's scenes, including the "Jim Crows" from Dumbo and the Tar Baby from Song of the South. He talks about this in the interview linked above. (This was intentionally pushed to the bottom so as not to become the focus of this post).

Long before there was Adult Swim, there was Cartoon Planet, an odd little show that showed Turner-owned cartoons with surreal vignettes featuring Space Ghost, Zorak and Brak in-between. Soon the old cartoons were dropped in favor of more strangeness from SG and his crew, ostensibly in the form of an afterschool special with regular features like mailbag, story time and educational bits like Learning to Talk Italian. Over time, the sketches got odder and odder. And perhaps best of all, there were the Brak songs! I'm a Cucumber, I Love You Baby ("Somebody left the cake out in the rain ... I was gonna eat that cake, but now it's all wet and I don't think I want any!"), Don't Touch Me, Crazy Lovesick Fool. Unfortunately there are no DVD plans in the works, "presumably due to licensing issues."

Well it appears there was a part2 released. I cannot be the only one happy to see this. I always have to watch these a few times to catch everything.
