Chicken Noodle Soup

The broth is just chicken and onions, with a confetti of vegetables added at the end where their flavor remains bright. The noodles are wide and winding... But, for me, the real triumph was giving the chicken parts and onion a saute... before adding water to make the soup. This deepened flavor base makes for magical soup, with a bronzed color, more robust flavor and significantly reduced prep time. ... With all of the blustery, cold days to go this winter, everyone... deserves to have a homemade, from-scratch chicken noodle soup that can be pulled off in just about an hour in their back pocket. Thanks to Science! we now know that chicken soup, if not able to cure colds, can in fact mitigate upper respiratory tract infections by inhibiting neutrophil migration.

Kung Pao Chicken

Ding Baozhen (1820-1886) was a governor of Sichuan province during the Qing dynasty. The emperor bestowed upon him the title Gōng Bǎo - "palatial guardian". He supervised the reconstruction of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. But he achieved immortality through the dish named for him: Kung Pao Chicken. Fuchsia Dunlop, whose recipe was chosen to accompany the NPR story, has a nifty blog. (previously)

Chickam 2011

Chickam 2011 has begun. Live cam of a chicken-egg incubator run by a Something Awful regular. So far five chicks have hatched, please welcome Rambo, Spaghetti, Weedcat, Pompadour and Duck. As previously the event was announced with a thread on SA where members could pick a number and pre-name the chicks. Some won't ever hatch though, so it's a bit of a gamble.

The chicks hang out in the incubator for up to 24 hours after hatching, but once they are pretty dry and fluffy they will be moved to the brooding box, where they will mill around being adorable en masse.

The attached chatroom can also be accessed by registered users of ustream using an IRC client if you prefer it to the inline chat. A lot of kids tune in to watch this, so the chat is G-rated.

To cover the first two most common questions, the purpley thing in the picture is a water-weasel with a thermometer in it, to gauge the temperature within the eggs and pipped means that a small hole has been made in the egg.

It is not uncommon for there to be a little blood in the egg when they hatch, don't worry. It is not uncommon for them to be trampled by the other chicks after they hatch, don't worry. The narcoleptic tendencies displayed by the fuzzy little newbies is also very normal, don't worry, be happy.

Surely you can't be serious?

“There is one line in ‘Zero Hour!’ where a stewardess says, completely seriously, ‘The life of everyone on board depends upon just one thing: finding someone back there who can not only fly this plane, but who didn’t have fish for dinner,’ ” Mr. Abrahams said. “That was the essence of the movie. We just repeated the line. We didn’t have to change a thing.”

Airplane! (known in Australia as Flying High!) turns 30 - What is it?

- It's a parody film made by the Zucker Brothers who would go on to make Police Squad, Top Secret! and the Naked Gun trilogy. But that's not important right now!

"A lot of comedies in the last 30 years have wanted to be ‘Airplane!,’ ” said Patton Oswalt.

“But most of those movies took the wrong message from ‘Airplane!’ They were gag, gag, gag, gag, where ‘Airplane!’ is really structured, driving the story along all the time."
