Margaret Wise Brown. Margaret Wise Brown, the author of Goodnight Moon and dozens of other children's classics, all but invented the picture book as we know it today. Combining poetic instinct with a profound empathy for small children, she knew of a child's need for security, love, and a sense of being at home in the world—and she brought that unique tenderness to the page. Yet these were comforts that eluded her. Brown's youthful presence and professional success—as an editor, best-selling author, and self-styled impresario—masked an insecurity that left her restless and vulnerable.
My favorite children's book author. The Runaway Bunny
is my favorite title of hers that I've read--I've run her name in Search before but never saw this site before:I had no idea she'd written so many titles. Nor how important she was to the genre. A biography.
An autobiographical essay
. Margaret Wise Brown: Awakened by the Moon
by Leonard S. Marcus looks interesting, too.

Complexity -> Simplicity for kids.
Ever wondered what happens to kids who takes those "So you want to be a rockstar..." books seriously?
Kcool 2002 - Move over Lil' Bow Wow, this 10 year old 'multi instrumental' musician is set to take over. He has the skills, the 'tude, and the um... songwriting abilities (scroll down

He needed it to cut an onion.
Under normal circumstances I would have shook my head and said, "Oh, those silly americans". This story, however, is about my 12-year old brother who's facing a 1 year expulsion after bringing a (small) kitchen knife to school for a science assignment. Zero tolerance - or zero interest in what's best for the kid?
Harmful to Minors
In the introduction to her book
she writes that " 'Harmful to Minors' launches from two negatives: Sex is not ipso facto harmful to minors; and America's drive to protect kids from sex is protecting them from nothing. Instead, often it is harming them." Is she right, some think she is just evil.

Schoolchildren Strip-Searched for Lost $5
This, from the same school district that overruled a teacher who failed cheating students
. I dunno about you, but making a bunch of 3rd graders get naked in school seems a little out of bounds. Feel free to tell
the school board what you think of this little exercise in pedophiliac totalitarianism.
Pennsylvania school sends notes home if kids are overweight
My paper ran this story Sunday, and it's starting to make its way around the Internet. But still: should schools warn parents if their kids are too heavy? And who decides 'too heavy'?
Bringing up Adultolescents
Newsweek has a fascinating article on adult children who're still living with their parents after graduating from college. It's hardly a new concept, but this is a good piece. (Especially noteworthy: The parents who spend away their own retirement savings providing for grown kids.) And if you've priced a supposed "starter" home recently, you know as well as I do that this trend isn't going away any time soon.
about the children on both sides of the Israeli occupation. check it out if you can.
"Children Drink 25% of Alcohol Consumed in the U.S."
At least according to the attention-grabbing headline of a press release recently issued by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. The only problem is that it wasn't true
. The organization had miscalculated the data, and the figure was actually closer to 11%. It was also misleading
, since the word "children" included 18, 19, and 20 year-olds (who presumably do most of the drinking). Aside from yet another lesson in the inherent malleability of statistics, what conclusions should we draw from this study? Should we accept that teenagers are going to drink, and teach moderation? Or is stricter enforcement of the 21 age-limit the way to go? I'm also interested in the views of those living in (more enlightened?) countries with a lower drinking age.
During my day's aimless surfing I was feeling a mite wistful, and it did my heart a load of good to stumble on the internet home of Funny Face mugs
. I also found the Mr. Men and Little Miss Club
. Both of these bits of pop culture were objects of devotion to me as a tyke. Looking at the sweet simplicity of the products today, it amazes me how easy it was to invest plastic mugs and simple line drawings with meaning and personality. I wish there was a place for them in today's Kiddie Kulture
which seems to be about filling in all the blanks before the kids get to use there imaginations.
"I don't think it's a big problem," Willy told her. "It's a lot of little problems, and I think that's good, because little problems have little solutions."
Leave it to a 6-year-old to describe my life far more eloquently than I ever could. I have an autistic son, and deal with the little things on a daily basis. I don't think I am all that unusual; what kind of little things are a part of your life that other people might consider a big problem?

Boy quits school at 7, becomes MIT professor at 20.
Is alternative education a good idea? This article seems much more positive than another recent boy-genius post
. It appears that most reporters assume that child prodigies are antisocial and that their parents are over-ambitious (they use negatively-connotated synonyms of those terms).
Children's lives insufficiently documented
. Video-shunning parent ostracized, jailed. I agree with this parent. Constantly taping your child, it does sometimes feel as if you're sacrificing actually being in the moment to capturing the moment, and this during some of the best "moments" of your child's life. If my understanding of old age is correct, however, memories are all you have. So I'm trying to nail me some shit down, for rocking chair days.
The American Academy of Pediatrics announces its support of adoption by same-sex parents.

A 9-year-old girl has been arrested on sex charges, perhaps the youngest suspect ever to face such charges in Manchester, local police say. [...] The alleged incident occurred in the fall, when the girl and three other children a 3-year-old boy and two girls, 4 and 5 were playing in a bedroom, [Police Sgt. John] Maston said. The girl is charged with initiating sex between the younger children and then with her, Maston said.

I admit I don't have all the facts, but it seems like this little girl's life about to be ruined because a game of Doctor went out of hand.
Widow of Sept. 11 Hero Gives Birth.
"Lisa Beamer, the widow of the man who cried, 'Let's roll!' as passengers aboard one of the doomed Sept. 11 flights prepared to confront their hijackers, has given birth to a healthy girl." How bittersweet; a part of him lives on, but I'm sure there is sadness because the husband couldn't be there for the birth.
Also, the Beamers have started a memorial foundation
for children who lost parents in the 9/11 attacks.

Pollution Linked to Birth Defects in Recent Study.
There is no better example of "terrorism" than maiming children simply to further bloat the wallets of the rich. Of course, our fearless right-wing leaders are right on top of the problem.
"They can throw the tapes or DVDs in there and they don't even know their kids are there."
Before the rise of back seat DVD theaters

In October 2000, in the mountains of Utah, three-year-old Gage Wayment wandered away from his father's truck and died of exposure
In July 2001, his father, Paul Wayment, was due to begin serving a 30-day jail sentence for negligent homicide. Instead, he killed himself
in the area where his son was found.
Now, Paul Wayment's parents have filed two million-dollar claims against the search and rescue teams
alleging that had they "conducted an appropriate and proper search," the boy and his father would still be alive.
It appears the search teams are protected by the Utah Good Samaritan Act
, unless they can be shown to have been grossly negligent, but this lawsuit may still have a chilling effect
on future search-and-rescue operations.

As Harry Potter tops all box office records,
it seems that some parents don't want their kids to watch the film because some think it promotes witchcraft.

A couple from the UK
have a beloved son who has leukemia, and who may need a marrow transplant to save his life. They are using in-vitro fertilization to select a fertilized egg which will be genetically similar enough to their son so that the resulting baby could be a marrow donor. Is it ethical to design a baby as a transplant donor, even to save the life of another child?
I was talking to my wife this morning about one of the kids "bombing" a test at school, and she asked me, "Is that good or bad?" I said, "Bad, of course. You know, you bomb a test, that means either flunking it or close to it." She said, "No, not any more, like 'it's the bomb' or 'we bombed that hill' on skateboards. Bombing is a good thing

Does anyone have info on taking legal action against someone that threatens you, harasses you or harms you?
The charges of "lewd conduct against a child under 14" against Paula Poundstone have been DROPPED.
She pleaded no contest to a couple other charges related to the fact that she had been driving drunk with her kids in the car. I'm posting this because child molestation charges ruin careers and entire lives. Since we covered the initial charges here quite a bit, it's only fair to note her apparent innocence just as prominently, especially during a time like this when any non-attack news is being largely ignored. (Indeed, this story itself is nearly two days old.)
