Learn the game that adults play in private--and use it against them!

Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble! A "board game" where you gather a gang of girls in the roaring 20s and taunt, fib, & flirt your way to high school domination! Gamasutra interview with creator. PlayThisThing! review.

(Used to be just a demo. I'd thought that they were going to monetize it, but it looks like the full version on there...maybe it makes you register later on..? Not done replaying to where the demo cut off yet.) Mac & PC versions available.

Besides, how could you not love a game with a title like Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble? They're high school girls. They're dangerous. And in trouble.

But Mom, it's for science!

foldit is a new computer game scientists have created that lets YOU help them make science!! Similar in spirit to the SETI@home project, and expanding on the idea of the Rosetta@Home project (which is also like the SETI project), this one requires active participation to work. And according to its creators, you could win a Nobel Prize!! But you have to get the top score, so start clicking, Nerdlinger!

Duck-dragons, dancing raccoons, and robots

Inspired by this earlier post, I thought it was time to formally introduce people to Rocky's Boots. Created in 1982 by Warren Robinett, Rocky's Boots was intended to teach digital logic to elementary-school kids. It was a sort of spiritual sequel (in that you also play a rectangle who can pick up and drop stuff) to his better-known game, Atari Adventure. Robinett is not only entirely responsible for that game (including the duck-dragons), but was the inventor of the Easter Egg, used there to make sure people knew whose work it was; it was Atari's policy at the time to never name its programmers or let them share in the profits from the sale of the games they'd spent so much hard work on.
After leaving Atari, Robinett got funding from the NSF to found The Learning Company, which, in addition to producing Rocky's Boots, also came out with a much more difficult sequel two years later called Robot Odyssey, which has the player burning microchips and rigging up automated robots to solve puzzles. Robot Odyssey itself has been given an enhanced port to Java, although it hasn't been updated in a while.

Super Columbine Massacre RPG

Super Columbine Massacre RPG! A computer role playing game based on the Columbine massacre and the event leading up to it in which the player plays the part of the killers. Think it's in poor taste? A Columbine survivor paralyzed from the chest down disagrees.

Is That A Dragon or a Duck?

Adventure - based on the classic text game of the same name - was the first game ever to contain an easter egg.

It seems laughably primitive these days, but when it first hit shelves, Adventure was a programming masterpiece. The text version of Adventure (by Willie Crowther and Don Woods) required hundreds of KB and a mainframe computer to operate, so much that Atari brass told Warren Robinett not to even bother with a 2600 version.

He did anyway, and the results are near legendary. The 2600 version of Adventure went on to sell over a million copies at $25 a pop. For his effort Robinett recieved absolutely nothing beyond his $22,000/year salary.

Play the 2600 Adventure. (Flash) If you're one of those who requires some eye candy, why not download the Quake 3 Adventure Map, instead?
