The referendum, for this nation of 5.25 million people and a unicorn as its national animal, will be held before the end of 2014. 16 and 17 year olds will be allowed to vote; the paper will contain just a single option on independence. Bookmakers currently predict a 'No' result. In 1979, Scotland voted on devolution. The referendum resulted in 51.6% support which, with a turnout of 63.8%, fell short of the required 40% electorate approval level. In 1997, a referendum resulted in a Scottish parliament with tax-varying powers.

Rumours abound in the UK about secret plans by the current conservative government to offer Baroness Thatcher, lately of ill health, a state funeral nearly exclusively afforded to the Royal family. There's now an e-petition to Her Majesty's government asking for the privatisation of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's funeral, which would be a more fitting tribute to her great legacy and maybe less likely to lead to undignified protests.

His account of political failures and disappointments clearly has a popular resonance and continues to pique commentariat interest since echoes from Cameron and launch by think tank Demos, last month. But is his "one nation" social Catholicism a viable vehicle for collective identity and passionate engagement?

Boris Johnson announces his candidacy for Mayor of London, though he is yet to be endorsed by the Conservative Party. Though decidedly right wing in his views (this clip, perhaps more than any other summarises his view on Europe, for example) his very English brand of buffoonery lends him unique appeal (though not universally).
