It's that time of the year again, when the (television network) continent of Europe comes together to sing, wear interesting clothing, and gyrate before an enthusiastic/baffled world. The 2013 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Malmö, Sweden (the 2012 winner). The city expects 100,000 fans to also attend. Several countries declined to enter this year, most for financial reasons. The two semi-finals, on Tuesday 14th and Thursday 16th May, will each deliver ten countries into the final. These will be joined by the hosts Sweden and the big five contributers to the contest to make a 26 country final on Saturday 18th May. Traditionally, the previous winners open the final (memorably, Lordi opening in Finland 2007). The evening alternates between performances and video clips extolling the virtues of the host country. Voting, sometimes controversial, takes place country by country. The winner performs, while their country contemplates the cost of hosting the event next year. A week out (and before the qualifying semi-finals), the bookmakers quote Denmark as a clear favorite, with significant money also riding on Ukraine, Norway, Russia and Azerbaijan. Dark horses include the Greece "Alcohol is free" entry (previously), Iceland, singing in their national language for the first time in 15 years, and Switzerland, whose band includes a 21 and a 95 year old. The UK entry, a successful rock ballad singer, is playing down her chances. As last year, the UK TV commentary is expected to sit somewhere between irreverent and sarcastic.

What is Pink Lady? In Japan they are remembered for a string of pop hits in the 70s, but Americans might remember them either from their disco single "Kiss In The Dark" or from an attempt to sell them to the US market in 1980 via a short-lived NBC variety show Pink Lady & Jeff (TVParty summary) with comedian Jeff Altman. (Opening). The show featured their Japanese hits, UFO, MONSTER (a bit more rock and roll), and SOS along with US hits like Boogie Wonderland, McArthur Park and the occasional guest star. (with encore) Also, Roy Orbison. Sadly, the show failed to break out and the two returned to Japan for a series of farewell concerts and retrospectives. 100 years ago tonight was the first performance of composer Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hoffmansthal's opera of romance, elegance and gender confusion, Der Rosenkavalier. Highlights [on YouTube] include the Feldmarschallin's meditation on the passage of time, the famous Presentation of the Rose duet, Baron Ochs's waltz, and the final trio (performed at Strauss's funeral, as remembered here by the late Sir Georg Solti.) Der Rosenkavalier is a love letter to a largely-imaginary Vienna of the 1740s. Its score revolves around the waltz, even though the dance did not become popular until after that period. The opera was such a hit that a silent film was made, with Strauss conducting the recorded soundtrack. Throughout the century, the opera has continued to inspire designers: from the original, iconic drawings of Alfred Roller to this 1950s production by Tony Duquette to Erté to Gottfried Helnwein, and many many more. Photographer Peter Tangen has been taking portraits and creating posters featuring self-declared real life super heroes like Geist, the Crimson Fist, and Life at The Real Life Super Hero Project. Since the previous time real-life super heroes were discussed on MetaFilter, the movement seems to have grown. Today's crop of heroes are a more mixed bag: Life, for instance, gives toiletries to the homeless. Zetaman is producing his own online show. Geist's original raison d'etre was to help flood victims, but he will "perform a citizen's arrest" when necessary. Some don't like Kick-Ass. One is a Fortune 500 company VP. More traditionally, the Black Monday Society is on patrol in Salt Lake City. DC's Guardian, of the Skiffytown League of Heroes, has a few choice words on how to be superheroic in your daily life. If you want to mask up, you can participate in costume workshops. Superheroes Anonymous also has a number of helpful articles on costuming as well.

Olympic Pants Wars

At first, it seemed the Azeris would win the Olympic Pants War handily, but then Norway, with its argyle advantage (in crazy and crazier varieties), seemed to have taken the lead. Now, US snowboard cross racer Nate Holland (competing, of course, in this wonderful outfit) is stepping in to set the pants rules for his own sport. But in the end, no matter what country they're competing for, it's the figure skaters who have won. As history has shown us, they always have the best pants of them all.
