Hello. DJ Flula (who's commentary on English idioms was discussed previously on MeFi) has discarded the conventional wisdom that the best place to make your recordings is the bathroom, choosing instead to record in cars. Because he shuns the use of pre-recorded audio when making his "AUTO tunes" tracks, many of the videos, such as this cover of Psy's Gangnam Style, begin with him laying down the loops that he uses for his background tracks. They also test the limits of how much DJ equipment and musical instruments can be crammed into one vehicle and still be usable, as shown in his rendition of Thrift Shop by Macklemore (NSFW, Explicit Lyrics). He will also ride along with other passengers, as evidenced in his video for Seven Nation Army that he made with his parents, and this cover of Bel Biv DeVoe's Poison in which he colaborated with Turquoise Jeep, instead of riding in one. Home-recorded piano cover goodness! Harder Better Faster Stronger - Note for note and Fur Elise Slightly Different. Two surprisingly awesome piano videos in one week, I can't help but share. The dude playing Daft Punk says "This is not the Kanye version, nor is it a loose interpretation. I spent a bunch of time going through the original track and writing down every note that's there -- I hope you enjoy it!" and the Fur Elise cover starts as a rollicking jazzy/ragtime re-imagining - make sure you stick around for the B section.

The Capital Children's Choir cover Spiritualized's So Long you Pretty Thing, and Florence and the Machine, Lady Gaga, Bjork, Guns N' Roses, among others. From the group's about page: The Capital Children’s Choir began in 2001 when a small group of 10 year old girls asked Rachel to start a singing club in St. John’s Wood, London. Over the years, the little group continued to grow and currently involves well over one hundred children from around the capital. They of course have facebook and twitter pages. No matter how you cut it, they've racked up an impressive list of performances.

"Mele Kalikimaka" (Ukelele cords) is a Hawaiian-themed Christmas song written in 1949 by Robert Alex Anderson. The phrase is borrowed directly from English but since Hawaiian has a different phonological system - Hawaiian does not have the /r/ or /s/ of English and doesn't have the phonotactic constraints to allow consonants at the end of syllables or consonant clusters - "Merry Christmas" becomes "Mele Kalikimaka". Creating Art from Failure. Take one epochal album by one of rock's legendary bands (called "one of the dullest and most confusing albums I've heard this year" by Rolling Stone on its release.) Name it after the nickname the band has given the venues where they appear, and for which they had written a song, which they neglected to put on the album itself. And then there's the album cover ... Originally planned to be shot in Peru, the photos were instead shot over a grueling 10 days at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, where the Irish giant Finn McCool (who created the Isle of Man by flinging a chunk of Ireland at an enemy) once did battle with the Scottish giant Benandonner -- sort of. (He disguised himself as his own baby and pretended to eat stone steaks, scaring the other giant away.) It's also where the climactic scenes of Hellboy II were shot, a film heavily influenced by Irish myth. The location also doubles as the Dothraki Sea in Game of Thrones. The cover was based on the final scene from Arthur C. Clark's "Childhood's End," in which humanity's children have ceased being human in any recognizable way, having turned into telekinetic beings. The image was a composite based on a series of photos taken by the legendary designer Aubrey Powell, founder of the album design agency Hipgnosis, which was responsible for such iconic covers as Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon," T. Rex's "Electric Warrior," and Peter Gabriel's "Melt" cover. The experience of making this album was intensely unsatisfying to Powell, but some accidental tinting in the studio transformed it. There were actually only two children on the cover, siblings Stefan and Samanatha Gates. British foodies might recognize the name Stefan Gates -- he is The Gastronaut, a food writer and host of "Cooking in the Danger Zone" (here he is eating possibly radioactive food in Chernobyl). In 2010, Gates recorded a half-hour documentary for BBC Radio 4 about his experience making the album cover ("an experience I found oddly disturbing," he says.) Rock guys cover showtunes: You probably know (if you're old enough) The Beatles' version of Til There Was You from The Music Man, Bobby Darin's somewhat-canonical Mack the Knife, originally from Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera, and The Marcel's cover of Rodgers and Hart's Blue Moon. But you might be less familiar with ... More Kurt Weill: The Alabama Song by The Doors, lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, from Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and September Song, interpreted here by James Brown lyrics by Maxwell Anderson, from the 1938 musical Knickerbocker Holiday. More Rogers and Hart: Elvis Costello, with My Funny Valentine (he also did a great version of Cole Porter's Let's Misbehave. The Mamas & the Papas did a very characteristic version of Glad to be Unhappy from On Your Toes. That other Elvis sang Rodgers and Hammerstein's You'll Never Walk Alone, which sounds suspiciously like his version of The Impossible Dream. Also very characteristic of the singers are Zing Went the Strings of My Heart, done by The Coasters, originally from the Broadway revue Thumbs Up! but probably much better known from the 1938 Judy Garland film Listen, Darling, and and Little Richard's inexplicible rendition of Sondheim and Bernstein's I Feel Pretty from West Side Story. (To get that one out of your head, here's Brian Setzer's Prologue/Jet Song.) And I can't leave out The Four Tops versions of On the Street Where You Live (Lerner and Lowe, My Fair Lady) and Facinating Rhythm (George and Ira Gershwin, Lady Be Good). In decades past, R&B and soul artists didn't shy away from covering country songs. That's right, children, straight up country songs. And the results were often stunningly good. For example, Al Green's performance of Kris Kristofferson's For the Good Times (best known as a hit for country crooner Ray Price). Or Ray Charles' performance of Eddy Arnold's You Don't Know Me. Or Aretha Franklin's performance of country chestnut You Are My Sunshine, first recorded in 1939 by the Pine Ridge Boys. And... Percy Sledge, best known for his iconic hit "When a Man Loves a Woman" went full-on country with his cover of Merle Haggard's Mama Tried. Meanwhile, here's Gladys Knight and the Pip's version of a Jim Weatherly tune that was first a hit for, once again, Ray Price, You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me. But let's take this back to where we started, shall we? Back to the great Al Green. Here's his performance of Hank Williams classic I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and his wonderful rendition of Willie Nelson's Funny How Time Slips Away. Which, by the way, was also covered, with a rather amusing spoken-word introduction, by blues/soul singer Junior Parker.

In March of 2009, an R.E.M. tribute and benefit concert was held at Carnegie Hall. One of the most interesting covers of that evening was Ingrid Michaelson's take on "Nightswimming." Michaelson used a looping pedal to slowly build the harmonies, so that by the end of the song she was accompanied by a whole choir of her own voice. While the Carnegie performance isn't available online, you can see a pared-down but still extraordinary performance from her appearance at the Sirius XM studios. (YT)

Ever since something was invented to replace it, people have been predicting the end of the book: The Death Of The Book Through The Ages Books (specifically, in codex form) contain so much more than text on a page. Folios ( making a comeback!) have instructions on folding. Some people are still hand-making books. Used books can have a deep effect on the casual browser.
