Tonight ends the 15th annual Woodward Dream Cruise, where tens of thousands of classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, and more cruise Woodward Avenue in Southeast Michigan. While the cruise celebrates the glory dates of the American automobile (and the culture that developed around it), there’s more to love about Woodward than just this one event. For instance, it just celebrated the 100th anniversary of being the first concrete highway in the world! And with over a million people attending and having a good time, it’s a sign that not all is bad in Detroit at the moment.

Reports spread around the internet about an offer by a Russian company to do pirate hunting cruises off the coast of Somalia. The news garners a swarm of comments and outrage, and it looks like we have the beginnings of a snowballing controversy. The only problem is, the "cruise" is a hoax. The website for the cruise itself has no contact information, and a little digging reveals the humor website it originally came from. So rather than a searing indictment of decadent millionaires or amoral Russians, this seems to be an indication of how incestuous and self-referential the internet is, and how poor fact-checking can be in the brave new world of blogs. Is this the true face of internet reporting?

Those crazy Scientologists are at it again. This time, a New Zealand website owner has been ordered to relinquish his clever domain name, scienTOMogy.info under threat of legal action. The site, an ugly-looking collection of links to other Scientology-debunking websites, serves as a clearinghouse for information about one of the church's most notorious members, Tom Cruise. CoS claims the domain is similar enough to their official website address to be confusing to Internet users.

Move over, monkeys. It gets better than flingin'.

O'Reilly's Cruise Cancelled Due to Lack of Interest
Fox News star Bill O'Reilly's week-long Caribbean cruise with a theme of "The Battle for American Values" has been cancelled because reservations fell "well short" of the anticipated 800 passengers. The cruise would have included a symposion on "How to Combat the ACLU."
It seems that Al Franken was one of the few who'd booked a reservation. That would have been fun to watch.
