MIT scientist Dr. Todd Rider has
developed a viral infection treatment that works by triggering host cell suicide when it finds the cell has been producing double-stranded RNA. Since dsRNA is the mechanism by which all viral infections proceed, but is not part of normal cellular function, the treatment seems both universal and safe.

The UN's FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation) have announced that they believe rinderpest, an frequently fatal viral disease that affects livestock and wild ruminants, to have been eliminated. This is only the second virus, after smallpox, to have been wiped out.
The BBC and
the Guardian discuss the story in brief, and
Science has a slightly more in-depth look at it. The FAO themselves have put up an
interesting history of the disease and its treatment.

Planning on partying hard this weekend? Here are some yummy (non-scientific) ways to treat your hangover. Canada, England, and the US tend towards piles of greasy foods. Try
poutine,
fish and chips, or
a greasy hamburger. For a Mexican hangover experience, look for
menudo (
previously) or
chilaquiles. Peru lauds
ceviche as a cure, while Ecuador turns to
encebollado and
churrasco. Bulgaria uses
sauerkraut brine, Turkey has
turnip juice, Korea looks for
haejangguk, and Scotland has a soft drink called
Irn-Bru.

French Doctor Finds Cure for Alcoholism in a Pill, Causing a Stir. Having himself suffered from
dipsomania, Dr. Olivier Ameisen, claims in his book,
Le Dernier Verre (
The Last Glass), that the muscle relaxant
bacloflen suppressed his craving for alcohol, curing his alcoholism. A top cardiologist in France, and doctor to
a former French PM, Ameisen has called for clinical trials to verify his bold claim, while causing some in the field to accuse him of irresponsibility for suggesting alcoholism can be cured by a pill, although
other pills are in the works.

The God Light was previously discussed
here. Once known as the Angel Light, it has been modified and now cures cancer, parkinsons, fibrocystic disease etc. As a side-effect of its healing powers, the device no longer allows one to see through walls.

Cancer Research Project Be a part of the search for a cure to cancer:
simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine.

Immortality Protein May Offer Cancer Vaccine. You know, I'm glad they're making progress, but once the 'cure' is found, I can't daydream about being this smart, intelligent doctor, (something right out of a soap), that creates the cure for cancer, and woos all the la-a-dies... then again there is always being that evil-twin and start cloning, with that, you won't need to wooo anyone, they're your toys! mwahahaha!
