Olympic turmoil in the Second City

On October 2, 2009, the International Olympic Committee will meet in Copenhagen to choose between Chicago, Rio de Janiero, Tokyo, and Madrid as the site of the 2016 Summer Olympics. While Chicago sends some of its most famous citizens to Copenhagen, a protest against Chicago's bid is planned at City Hall. On October 2, 2009, the International Olympic Committee will meet in Copenhagen to determine where the 2016 Olympics will be held - Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, or Madrid. The final report on each city is posted here (PDF link).

Chicago 2016 has been aggressively promoting the potential benefits of hosting the games, citing economic benefits, lasting sports legacy programs, and the potential for increased federal funding for infrastructure improvements. Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey are going to the meeting in Copenhagen to sell the city. But, it appears that in much of Chicago’s populace, support for the Olympics is dwindling.

At the time of the last IOC visit, the Chicago 2016 organizing committee had not provided complete guarantees covering budget shortfalls, with the city and state providing collectively $750M shortfall guarantees. On September 8th, the Chicago finance committee authorized Mayor Richard M. Daley to sign a host-city contract guaranteeing that Chicago, if chosen, will spend as much as is needed to host the Olympics, and absorb any operating losses.

On September 29, a rally at Chicago City Hall is planned to protest the Chicago 2016 bid. The protests that have surrounded Chicago 2016 have been varied, and complaints range from a $500M budget shortfall and the need for better infrastructure for its citizens, Chicago’s corrupt political climate, and opposition to the plan to destroy much of the historic Michael Reese Hospital, the planned site for the Olympic Village. Meanwhile, on a different front, some Chicagoans have taken to promoting Rio’s bid, rather than protesting Chicago’s.

Bill Clinton to the rescue

Bill Clinton makes secret trip to North Korea, wins pardon and apparent release of two captive US journalists. Jailed reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee, employees of Al Gore's Current TV, were arrested for spying in March and had recently been sentenced to 12 years in a labor camp.
Mogadishu Madness

Two Current correspondents are the first American journalists to venture into Mogadishu, Somalia after the infamous 1993 incident when two U.S. military Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by Somali militia. They film one of city street gun markets to show how easy it is to buy an AK-47, a machine gun or even RPG launcher. Their full-length video report Mogadishu Madness reveals the country under the self-proclaimed government of the Islamic Court Union, which was later overthrown with the help of the United Sates.

Current TV --Al Gore's new news channel, just launched. What began as an effort to challenge Rupert Murdoch and the right-wing domination of the corporate media has transformed into a business proposition to lure a youth audience with lofty rhetoric, new technology and pop-culture content, says The Nation. So, CNN for MTV viewers? or a real alternative voice? the status bar onscreen is just ridiculous, i already find.

UK Current Affairs by Email

For any society, in any age, the study of politics
ultimately comes down to one elemental question: how are people
persuaded to acquiesce in a polity where the distribution of power is
manifestly unequal and unjust, as it invariably is. -- The quote from David Cannadine that opened a recent Newsnight newsletter from Jeremy Paxman. Email may not be the sexiest 'net medium, but I wait daily for two witty, well informed summaries of UK current affairs; the second is Channel 4's Snow Mail. And weekly, there's the Guardian's Backbencher.
