"If anything at all, perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add but when there is no longer anything to take away." American ballerina Maria Tallchief died Thursday. A native of Oklahoma, she was descended from the Osage Nation. She began dancing at a young age and studied with another formidable woman of ballet, Bronislava Njinska. At age 17, she joined the Ballets Russes and went on to become the first-ever prima ballerina of Native American descent. During the course of her 88 years, she:

Danced in Agnes DeMille's Rodeo
Married choreographer George Balanchine
Reigned as the New York City Ballet's first-ever prima ballerina
Became famous for her performance of The Firebird as choreographed by Balanchine with scenery and costumes by Mark Chagall
Played Anna Pavlova on film in a biopic starring Esther Williams
Danced "The Four Moons" along with four other "Oklahoma Indian Ballerinas" and was memorialized in an outdoor sculpture installation in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Refused to change her Osage surname to Tallchieva despite pressure to adopt a Russian-sounding stage name
Founded the Chicago City Ballet
Received a Kennedy Center Honor and National Medal of the Arts and was named Princess Wa-Xthe-Thomba ("Woman of Two Worlds") by the Osage tribe

Her sister, Marjorie Tallchief, was also a prima ballerina.

Richmond City Jail hosts a father-daughter dance, bringing fathers and daughters together beyond the visitors booth (photos). “I just gotta break this cycle I’m in. I’m just tired of it,” Andre Morman says, adding that he can’t wait to see his youngest daughter. “I haven’t been able to pick her up in nine months.” He’s been behind bars for the last nine months, this time for failing to pay child support for a 15-year-old daughter from another relationship. He gets out in 88 days. He has nine children total and says he just doesn’t have the money. Only some of the inmates are allowed to attend the dance. It’s open only to nonviolent offenders; interested fathers are interviewed by a jail deputy and have their criminal histories reviewed. They must also get permission from the child’s mother. Many of the fathers attend a fatherhood class in preparation for the dance. At one point, Richmond activist and hip-hop artist Joe’i Chancellor performs her prose-poem Father for the class. Her own father went to jail when she was nine and didn’t come home until she was 21. The men cry as they reflect on their relationships with their own fathers and daughters. According to the Washington Post, "the dance at the Richmond jail is less improbable than it sounds: Historically, the father-daughter dances have been used to help American families reunite. They became widespread in the U.S. after WWII as a way to reintegrate men into family life." [I was unable to find a citation] It’s too early to know whether this dance will have a lasting impact, but for Richmond City Sheriff C.T. Woody, it’s a start.

Kitchen Junkets in New England homes were a wintertime venue for live music and contra dance - a social dance form that's never really faded from the region's popular culture. Often credited with keeping the form alive, scholar/musician Ralph Page celebrated the kitchen junket and other contra traditions from 1949-1984 in his hand-printed magazine Northern Junket, available indexed and fully digitized via the University of New Hampshire. Ralph Page's name is known today primarily because, in his memory, UNH hosts an annual Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend - a well-attended contradance gathering. Page was also a founder of the New England Folk Festival Association, familiarly known as NEFFA, which still hosts a popular early spring folk festival of music and dance. Ralph also wrote the book on contra dance...five of them, actually. Chris Page (apparently no relation) created a handy index of favorite/notable Northern Junket features. Chris Page's contra dance site contains some great links to other resources. A pretty comprehensive pile of links is available at contradancelinks.com. If this interests you, there goes your Sunday! I apologize in advance for the many dead links you're likely to encounter. The grassroots/volunteer nature of the contradance community tends to mean that things come and go, but there's always someone keeping their corner of it alive. Contra grew up alongside of (and had some pretty complex interactions with) formal European-style dance traditions taught by dancing-masters in the 18th and 19th centuries. Early American dance manuals often combine a bit from both traditions.

In 1959 Fred Astaire hired renowned makeup artist John Chambers to work on his television special, Another Evening with Fred Astaire. The assignment? Turn Fred Astaire into Alfred E. Neuman. The results were predictably strange. For Astaire fans, here is the Playlist for the entire special. Those who have seen Argo will already know this, but it was news to me: while Chambers was best known for his work in Hollywood, particularly on Planet of the Apes, he also worked for the CIA and is rumored to have been behind the Bigfoot creature captured on the Patterson film.
