Today, Ken Griffey Jr. is exactly as old as Shakespeare was the day he died, Joe Montana is exactly as old as Nixon was the day of Watergate, and Robert Downey Jr. is exactly as old as Steve McQueen was the day he died (plus, my sister is exactly as old as George Sisler was the day he had 6 hits in a single baseball game). Yesterday, Carrie Underwood was exactly as old as Thomas Edison was the day he invented the lightbulb, Ralph Macchio was exactly as old as Mikhail Gorbachev was the day he became head of the USSR, and Blue Jays 3rd baseman Josh Donaldson was exactly as old as Darryl Strawberry was the day he hit 9 homers for the Springfield Isotopes (and my aunt is exactly as old as Walter Cronkite was the day he retired). You can check dates of your own choosing using the widget, and Chris Jaffe updates his Twitter daily with more and weirder/sillier On This Day facts (i.e "If this was the planet Neptune, this would be the 1st anniversary of the death of Mary Shelley.").

Today, October 14, 2014, is World Standards Day! Except in the USA, where it's celebrated October 23, 2014. (Canada splits the difference by celebrating it on October 15).
You Just Threw Out a Perfectly Good Gallon of Milk Because You Think the "Sell By" Date Means Something. Food waste is a huge problem. Globally, one-third of all food produced goes uneaten. In the US, that's up to 40% (pdf report). What can we do to prevent labeling confusion? And the most important question... should you eat it or is it expired?
Who needs machine readable dates? As far as I can see there are two target audiences for this operation. The first is obviously social applications that have to work with dates, and where it can be useful to compare dates of two different events. An app must be able to see if two events fall on the same day and warn you if they do. However, as a target audience social applications are immediately followed by historians (or historical, chronological applications). After all, historians are (dare I say it?) historically the most prolific users of dates, until they were upstaged by social applications. [more inside]
From the mid 40s to the mid 50s Coronet Instructional Films were always ready to provide social guidance for teenagers on subjects as diverse as dating, popularity, preparing for being drafted, and shyness, as well as to children on following the law, the value of quietness in school, and appreciating our parents. They also provided education on topics such as the connection between attitudes and health, what kind of people live in America, how to keep a job, supervising women workers, the nature of capitalism, and the plantation System in Southern life. Inside is an annotated collection of all 86 of the complete Coronet films in the Prelinger Archives as well as a few more. Its not like you had work to do or anything right? [more inside]

Hookup vs. Dating Seems that the 'hook up' is gaining popularity with girls (it's always been popular with boys) in high school and college these days. More and more women are looking to expend their sexual energy in a manner that they perceive to be safe and committment-free. Why didn't this happen when I was in high school?
BlindDateBlog started it's run yesterday. Ten men and ten women battle it out to be the finalists in the male/female (not-so-)blind date. Can you pic out the MeFites? Can you pic the winners?
Early tomorrow morning we'll hit 2:02:02 2-02-'02.
License for love. Although some might call it a license for stalking. This is a patent for a method to request a date with a someone knowing only their vehicle license plate number. Quite a concept. I wonder what Mr. Wertheim will name this service.
