Record Store Day encourages music lovers to support their independent record store on the third Saturday of April. Since 2008, the day has been growing in popularity, and this year more than 700 stores across the U.S. are participating. This year’s batch of vinyl goodies include exclusive offerings from David Bowie, The XX, Double Dagger, Brian Eno x Nicolas Jaar x Grizzly Bear, Built to Spill, Mumford & Sons, The Rolling Stones, Pulp (After You), Pink Floyd, GZA (Liquid Swords album — packaged in a box that doubles as a Chess Set), Bob Dylan, Stephen Malkmus And Friends (covering Can's Ege Bamyasi) the White Stripes, the Grateful Dead (Rare Cuts and Oddities 1966) and Notorious B.I.G. (1994 debut album, Ready to Die, will be reissued as a 2-LP numbered white vinyl set with an alternate cover). MGMT are even releasing a cassette featuring a new track, "Alien Days." It will also come with a download code, in case you can't find your cassette deck or old Walkman.

Most of them are in centers, although a sizable minority attend home day cares.... In other countries, such services are subsidized and well-regulated. In the United States, despite the fact that work and family life has changed profoundly in recent decades, we lack anything resembling an actual child care system. Excellent day cares are available, of course, if you have the money to pay for them and the luck to secure a spot. But the overall quality is wildly uneven and barely monitored, and at the lower end, it’s Dickensian."

Browncoats: Redemption was an unofficial and independent, not-for-profit film based in the Firefly/Serenity universe. The movie, which was filmed, funded and produced entirely by volunteers, followed a new ship and crew three months after the events of the movie Serenity. It also featured cameos from Adam Baldwin and Michael Fairman. Browncoats Redemption premiered at Dragon*Con 2010, was then screened at sci-fi conventions throughout the US for a year and sold on DVD at the film's official site. All proceeds (over $115,000) went to charity. The DVD is no longer available for sale. I know, or think I know, the power of it, and I know that the industrial organization, as I stated in the beginning, is its broadest interpretation. There's been a lot of great photography of Yosemite National Park. National Geographic has done some excellent work and there's plenty of photos that provide a great historical view of the area. More recently there was a fantastic zoomable 17 gigapixel project (previously). But this HD time-lapse day & night video of several locations around Yosemite Park provides perhaps the most amazing view of the area yet. More info on the making of the video at Project Yosemite.

With the loss of Elizabeth Taylor perhaps it is time to check in on those performers from the golden age of film who are still with us. Perhaps you are like me and are comforted that Luise Rainer who won two Best Actress Oscars in the 30s, or Olivia de Haviland, Melanie of Gone With The Wind, and her sister and rival, Joan Fontaine live on - along with those who've always seemed old (Harry Morgan). Of course, he's not the oldest man in the world. May they shine forever. ;)

Up against Take That's new single, the Royal British Legion are hoping that the recent support for all things Remembrance will translate into best-seller sales and funds to support serving and ex-service personnel. The Royal British Legion are hoping to make it to the top of the British charts this weekend with two minutes of silence. Various celebrities and serving and ex-serving personnel feature in the video (a short clip of it here). The British Legion are not the only ones hoping for a number one with a silent track - Cage Against the Machine are hoping to follow the success of Rage Against the Machine which had a Christmas number one with 'Killing in the Name Of' thanks to a Facebook campaign to make sure an X-factor winner didn't get the top spot. (Previously on MeFi). Say what you like about the commercialisation of Remembrance Day and selling a single of silence, at least it is less tacky than crystal poppies .
