INTERNET 1897: A Series of Pneumatic Tubes, Some of Which Contain Cats

Between 1897 and 1953, the New York City post office used a system of pneumatic tubes to move up to 30% of its mail around the city. Among the first things sent whizzing across Manhattan during the inauguration of the system: a black cat. Via the links in that Atlantic article, you can find other strange aspects to the story. For example, there was a pneumatic subway in use in NYC by 1870 — The Beach Pneumatic Transit covered an entire block for three years!

"Error is Horror": The Dabbawallas of Mumbai

Follow that Dabbawalla For nearly 130 years, Mumbai's Dabbawallas have been delivering lunches from customers' homes to their workplaces and taken the empty tiffin boxes back again. The service, with its origins in the mid 1880s when a single textile mill worker paid an errand boy to bring him his lunch from home, is a complex system with in which color coded lunch boxes are passed from Dabbawalla to Dabbawalla to reach their destination, creating a network that, in many ways, resembles the Internet itself. i want my Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream and i want it now...

living in atlanta? missing kozmo? meet zifty! they're closed for the holiday today, but if you've got a hankering for snackage, movies or the essentials of life (and you live in cental atlanta), then zifty might just fill that portion of your life that's been empty since april 11, 2001.

has anyone spotted any other companies attempting to reproduce the kozmo experience on a low-coverage, one-city-only scale? even with all of its instant gratification, does this idea really stand a chance?

According to MSNBC, Kozmo delivers to predominantly white parts of town.

According to MSNBC, Kozmo delivers to predominantly white parts of town. This is a thorny issue all around. The company claims to target areas of high internet usage, but there's a whole host of factors that would lead to huge racial differences in those areas. I still believe one of the greatest things about the internet is that it's a place where race really doesn't matter, but unfortunately the barriers to entry aren't exactly colorblind. MSNBC went so far as to produce some interesting maps that support their claim pretty well though.

How much would you pay

How much would you pay for a giant donut? Don't answer yet. What if that donut were not 7, not 9, but 14" in diameter? Now how much would you pay? $10? $20? $25? Best Donut Man of New York will deliver a giant 14" donut to your doorstep for a mere $43.95 (which includes overnight delivery)! Now if only I could find someone to deliver a garbage can size cup of coffee and some throwrug sized napkins, I'd be totally set.
