10/GUI

Since SRI and Xerox invented the GUI and the mouse in the late 1970s, technology has leaped forward, but the way we interact with our computers has stood still. "10/GUI aims to bridge this gap by rethinking the desktop to leverage technology in an intuitive and powerful way."

The Little Mac Classic That Could

A Mac Classic shows bullies what's for in "3½ inches is enough" by Unreal Voodoo. This demo (actually written to run on a Mac Classic) was presented at ASSEMBLY, Finland's largest computer festival. More highlights from ASSEMBLY are available at GameSetWatch. The demos are mostly trippy and impressive hand-coded animations as one might expect, but there's also a live action short featuring a Rube Goldberg machine.

Many photos make light work

Assistant professor Noah Snavely at Cornell is into making models. Computer models of real scenes are assembled from photographs, and can then be used to create a better image, a better video, or a 3D representation of an entire city. Snavely was on the team that created the jaw-dropping demo video in 2008. That project, titled “Using Photographs to Enhance Videos of a Static Scene”, was followed by “Enhancing and Experiencing Spacetime Resolution with Videos and Stills” (without Snavely and some of the original team).

Now Snavely is working with six people from his alma mater (the University of Washington) to re-create Rome, Italy. Pulling over 150 thousand photos from Flickr (tagged with "rome" or "roma"), the team used a cluster of computers working in parallel to compare photos and model the common buildings. This results in models of several sites, each with incredible precision.

Giant Robots Du Jour

Walkie Tonky is a physics-based action game which puts you in the shoes of a giant robot invading Earth. Smash and kick your way forward using the robot's every limb to cause mayhem and clear the road ahead. (Download required, from a sort of funky filehosting site. Probably Windows only, but I'm not sure.) The game download is described as a demo, which presumably means there will be more to it at some point. Gameplay is currently score based, with the more destruction you cause the higher your score is. Learn to kick fast.

96k of hilarity

The demo scene is alive and well. Showing off just what can be done with your computer with tiny programs (serious hardware required, video link included). The point of this post? Sumotori Dreams. A physics based game packed into 96k. It's not the gameplay itself which is so great, it's the stumbling drunk AI characters. Play a round, then sit back and watch them stumble (youtube). Safe for work, if gales of laughter don't draw suspicion.

This online compilation offers an exciting glimpse into Meek's unconventional way of composing, as he recorded and rerecorded in an attempt to communicate the music in his mind to musicians.
The Demoscene is still going strong. It's been awhile since we last discussed the scene, and it's still cranking out tons of great stuff. The new home of the scene has categories and ratings, which sure beats the old standard. There's a bit of everything, from legos to disco, from 256 bytes to 64k to fairly large, and from Amiga to Mac to C64.
