Pixish is Closing. Today, Derek Powazek announced on his blog that the collaborative website for creative and design work will close on October 31, openly admitting "We underestimated the 'spec work' issue." To wit: Pixish launched in February 2008, at which point MeFi discussed heatedly whether this latest web venture from perennial web-venturer (and MeFite #44) Derek Powazek was a good-faith effort to promote designers -- or a critically flawed project promoting evil via spec work. Jonathan Coulton was even involved at one point, and things got very meta. In his post, Powazek offers several additional compelling reasons for the business decision... but can't they all be traced back to the spec work fracas, really?

Powazek on Metafilter Not sure if this has been posted before, but I just found it on a new sub-site of Communication Arts that appears to be more focussed on web design. Derek is writing a book on online communities, but I still got the impression that the interviewer didn't know who he was.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Derek has left the building. While I have been amused by reading the life of Derek Powazek, once and a while, I think he has made a sound decision. I really appreciate his last question, who is a blog for? Reminds me of the first question from my Journalism 101 professor: "Is art for art's sake?"

Shiver me timbers... Derek P becomes a Pyrate. That "Meet the Beatles" cover will soon need to be replaced with one from Sly and the Family Web. Or Treasure Island. Wow, The Fray is being featured on Adobe's site, congrats to Derek. I find this quote from the review kind of funny: 'Literary ability may not be crucial to getting a story published on the Fray, but honesty is.' I've always thought the stories were very well written, guess I'm worse of a writer than I thought.

Derek put some photos from the Fray Day online, and is working on getting the audio together. In the meantime, enjoy a picture of me at the festivities (I'm the guy walking towards the left in between the two people looking at the small house). My favorite image and memory from the Fray Day is this, the caption says it all.
