Where did the formula that a dog ages 7 years for every 1 human year come from? No one knows for sure, but the BBC, using data from the UK Kennel Club and US Veterinary Medical Database, have come up with a more accurate online dog years calculator. The truth about how dogs age is more fascinating, and less straightforward, than we thought. While the calculator only works for pure breeds, cross breeds can expect to live an average of 1.22 years longer. Somewhat relatedly, researchers at the University of Georgia found that spayed and neutered pets live 1.5 years longer than unaltered pets (something which may also be true for humans).

A rather surreal story seems to be developing around rapper Tim Dog, who recently died (previously) - or did he? Enough people believe he actually faked his death that an arrest warrant has been issued for him. Apparently they cannot find a death certificate. Why would he fake his own death? Tim Dog, it seems, while being at best a mediocre rapper, was a world class con artist. According to a Mississippi judge, he owes about 2 million total to various people he's scammed.

Providing cheetahs with a canine companion is standard practice at the San Diego Zoo and has been adopted by other organizations that house and care for cheetahs.

Remaining silent would represent a clear violation of the veterinarian’s oath I took when I was admitted into this profession."

However, dogs should only take carefully measured doses of the drug -- when they break into their owners' medicine it can be disorienting and unpleasant.

Rapper Tim Dog died today, at age 46 after a long bout with Diabetes. Tim Dog was Appreciated, inspirational, a golden age example of Classic Wackness, a Con Man outed on Dateline, and arguably the instigator of the East/West coast (nsfw audio) rap beef of the nineties. As mentioned in the above Wiki link, Tim Dog got his start with the Ultramagnetic MC's, and started a group (Ultra) with Kool Keith, which lead to the founding of Funky-Ass Records, and the first Keith Album "Sex Style" Hip-hop Encyclopedia J-Zone (twitter) might have been his biggest fan (with a bit of satire on the side), but plenty of folks on twitter are expressing their loss. The Germans continue the tradition of always having the best word for any given situation, where it's called "blockade mutton". Oh, and the linked Vice article has perhaps the single greatest descriptor in the history of English food writing, describing a fermented shrimp paste "which tasted like a medieval prostitute’s gusset". Which is either a triumph for English, Frat Boy Division, or legitimately great.

NYT: Larry Selman died Sunday morning of heart failure. He was 70. Larry was the feature of the Academy Award nominated "The Collector of Bedford Street" (wikipedia). "The 'collector' in the title refers to Mr. Selman’s prodigious work as a neighborhood fund-raiser. From 1970 until his death he collected more than $300,000 by some estimates — from people he approached in the Village, one at a time, requesting donations of $1 and $2 each. He collected money for St. Vincent’s Hospital, the families of Sept. 11 victims, Muscular Dystrophy research, AIDS research, Kiwanis International projects and animal rescue groups, among others."
