Newsfilter: 30,000 customers in the San Francisco area lost power today at about 1:50pm PDT, in a series of power failures which knocked out a major datacenter hub: 365 Main. The hub controls servers for many social media sites, including Technorati, Netflix, Yelp, Craigslist and all Six Apart properties, including TypePad, LiveJournal and Vox. (6A's twitter stream has updates.) More here and here.
Amusingly enough, 365 Main tempted fate and released a press release today patting themselves on the back for "two years of 100-percent uptime".

Google has crashed? Is this an historic moment? I'm stunned.

Matt's back, and so is Metafilter! Just in time too, because I was about to get a big promotion for all the work I've finished in the last two weeks. What did you do on your MeFi vacation?

Welcome back. Did you find interesting sites while you couldn't use Metafilter? I happened upon
camborg.com and its galleries.

Metafilter taken offline for two and a half days by a Bay Area network outage, along with Blog*Spot, Evhead, and Megnut. Fortunately, everything appears to be back to normal. Good, because I think the DTs were starting to kick in.

Well, I tried.... Although upgrading the hard drive on this server was unsuccessful, hopefully it was amusing to some of you. Especially those that don't use NT.

I'm saying this from experience: avoid Interland.com's web hosting at all costs. These guys are one of the nation's largest web hosting operations and every minute I've had to deal with them has been painful. Their uptime is terrible, their NT servers are so unreliable that your site may be down more than it is up on an average day, and when I asked their tech support staff about it, they basically said 'if you want better uptime, upgrade to a higher account.' That type of arrogance and customer disservice shouldn't be rewarded by new customers. Avoid these people at all costs.
