Even in the grips of the Great Recession, one industry's profits are bubbling up, pouring forth, and experiencing growth in market share, dollars spent, and profit: craft beer! World beer prodcution is up, and the major producers are reduced to bullying, postentially short-sighted sponsorships, intimidation and exploitation of the legal system to maintain their profits. Macrobreweries have tried to release their own versions of popular styles, or take over independant breweries. (Previously: Goose Island bought by Anheuser-Busch Can Craft Beer Save America? All over the United States, local breweries are popping up. Bend, OR leads the way. Craft brewers in Oregon have broken production records, North Carolina has encouraged breweries to move there, and Texas could see a $5.6 billion economic impact if restrictive laws are changed. Part of the problem is the byzantine 'Three tier' model for distribution (previously and previouslier). Mississippi and Alabama have the most restrictive laws in the nation, but people are pushing for change (previously). You can take a beer-destination vacation, pick up some local ale when away from home, or grab a pint while at a baseball game. A beer map of the US, previously. The best beer city in the United States, previously. Excellent bars focusing on craft beer have appeared around the country, including one that works like a stock exchange. There are many different styles of beer: the historic roots of seven styles, ten healthier beers, eight India Pale Ales (IPAs) you might want to try (along with their endless sub-categorization and why it is called IPA, previously), the resurrection of lambic in America, a recommendation engine for dark beer, aged beer, and why lager is better than ale. Hops and water are two of the key ingredients, and it is the water that led a famous West Coast brewery to open a new location on the East Coast. Kona, like some other microbreweries, has a focus on sustainability. Anchor is known for their hand-drawn labels. Full Sail's interview with their founder shows brewing is no longer a boy's club. Redhook successfully rebrands itself. Sierra Nevada runs a beer camp for people who want to learn more. Dogfish Head's founder Sam Caglione gives a talk, is featured in The New Yorker, covered closely in 'Beer Wars' on Netflix Instant, and was previously on MetaFilter. Yuengling has become the largest US-owned brewery, and I couldn't possibly expand on this excellent post. The beginning of this trend started with Sam Adams, which is changing their look to remain competitive. Some snobs turn up their noses at Sam Adams, but they forget the small business startup help and hop sharing program that the Boston Beer Company has done to help other breweries. Still apprehensive? You may be surprised to learn that beer saved the world(video). The Case For Beer, The Benefits of Drinking Beer, a Beer Taxonomy and an answer to the ubiquitous debate over cans. In fact, canning beer is controversial, even during a significant expansion in the practice. One brewery avoids it completely, even as it becomes more accepted and easier. Cans keep out light, can be packed more closely, and chill faster. Before bottles or cans became popular, there was the growler (previously). While travelling, you might get offered a craft beer in your hotel, or carry some with you on a hike. Be sure to secure your beer against unwanted visitors. And you'll need to know how to say cheers in 50 languages. Of course, appreciation of good beer and developments in brewing are not limited to the US. Europeans, particularly the British, are brewing up their own new beers. France's beer has been neglected (though hopefully not for long). Even in traditionally-minded Germany and Belgium, changes are brewing. There is lots and lots of information on the internet, for anyone who wants to learn more. Cheers!

Everyone knows America's Oldest Brewery is D.G. Yuengling & Son (and daughters) of Pottsville, PA (and Tampa, FL) This family owned brewery was established as the "Eagle Brewery" in 1829 by a German immigrant named David Gottlob Jüngling. After the original brewery burned down in 1831 it was relocated to its current location. It was built into a mountain with caves dug into the side, a common practice to preserve beer and to achieve the cool temperatures required to make lager before refrigeration. Yuengling spent most of its history as a small regional brewery and only began to attract national attention years after the launch of Yuengling Traditional Lager in 1987, which went on to become the flagship product of the company and now accounts for 80% of Yuengling's production. On the strength of that growth, and with other brewers being bought out by or outsourcing production to foreign companies, Yuengling has now passed The Boston Beer Company to claim the title of America's largest brewing company as well. In this globalized beer era where giants war for market share, products from America's new largest brewer are only available in 14 states.

Bored by Bourdain? Zimmern make you go zzzzzzzz? Then this is the travel show you've been longing for: from the BBC, Oz and James's Big Wine Adventure. Think Felix and Oscar on a camper van road trip; with wine critic and dandy Oz Clarke teaching Top Gear's James May all about the noble grape. Season one finds them touring the vineyards of France. Season two, California. In the third series, Oz and James Drink to Britain, we follow the unlikely boon companions as they get soused from Plymouth to Aberdeen. Episodes are currently being rebroadcast on BBC America and are also available On Demand. Fortunately, some kind soul [IchiDeux] has put all three series up on YouTube. This is as entertaining and informative as anything you'll find on the telly. Not convinced? Here they are in Ireland. Switchel: The original Colonial era sports drink

It's going to be a hot one today in the northeast. Why not make some switchel to stay cool? Also known as haymakers punch, switchel was consumed by field workers during the hay harvest in the days before commercial sports drinks. Recipes vary, but the basic ingredients are the same: Apple cider vinegar, molasses, sugar, ginger and water. With the exception of water, all of the ingredients are natural sources of potassium, an electrolyte. Some recipes also call for oatmeal, presumably for added body and flavor. As mentioned in the Smithsonian Magazine blog post above, its possible that switchel evolved from an older honey and vinegar concoction called Oxymel. If these folk recipes all sound rather vile, you might try a modern switchel-inspired cocktail instead: The Oxymelon. (Previously on Ask MeFi)

The Guardian has an article on Pimm's, a traditional gin-based English summer drink. Invented by one James Pimm in London in 1840, Pimm's soon became associated with upper-class institutions and the British Empire; its popularity declined somewhat in the decades following World War 2 (apart from a few revivals as part of ironic constructions of "Britishness"), though it has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. Recipes for serving Pimm's vary, though they typically involve mixing it with lemonade and/or ginger beer in a jug and adding oranges, strawberries, sliced cucumber and mint. While the formula remains a secret, knockoffs do exist (both Sainsbury's and Aldi sell their own substitutes, though Sainsbury's had to change the label on its to look less like the original), or you could try making your own.

Soft drinks have become ubiquitous around the world. Everywhere you go, you are more likely than not going to see them being sold at stores, food carts and roadside stands. It all allegedly started with sherbet in the Middle East. Today, Coca Cola has over 3000 different soft drinks it markets around the world. With the proliferation of carbonated beverages, some truly odd flavors have been released. Among these are kimchi cola, colas expressing nationalist sentiments, and the usual strange entries in the field from Japan. These drinks can also shed some light upon the local flavors. For the past few years, there has been a debate within the U.S. as to whether American Coke or Mexican Coke is better. Whatever your thoughts, this flavored water has certainly come a long way.

Daiquiris on the Bounty!

The Daiquiri is a drink which was much beloved by Ernest Hemingway. Daiquiris are made with rum. Rum spelled the doom of William Bligh's (yes, the Mutiny on the Bounty Bligh, of which numerous films were made) term as the governor of Australia, as he was expelled from his post by the New South Wales company in Australia's only military coup. I freely admit my inspiration for this entire post was the bar school video which is the first link in this post. It transfixed me with horror. There are more. Watch in despair as the drink melts as he goes on and on and then throws half of it away!
