Tantric Negotiating

Yesterday was Day 80 of the NHL lockout, with the situation looking pretty grim after a failed intervention by US federal mediators. Then on Monday, WBZ-TV Boston's Steve Burton surprised everyone by leading off his segment with this bombshell. Tuesday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Union Director Don Fehr took the unusual tactic of stepping back to allow owners and players to negotiate directly. With the annual Board of Governors meeting happening Wednesday and a press conference scheduled afterwards, NHL insiders across twitter are expressing cautious optimism that the puck will soon be dropped.

Gay kids told to stop looking so gay in order to avoid being bullied

The Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) has rejected a policy proposal that called for the protection of gay students and staff from bullying and discrimination. The policy was proposed by the Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB), which adopted a similar policy in 2011. ASBA is facing criticism after nearly two-thirds of the trustees voting against approving the policy. Adding to the controversy are comments made by trustee Dale Shaffrick, who suggested that gay students should try to be less open about their sexuality "[...] for their own benefit."

EPSB chairwoman Sarah Hoffman says they are disappointed that the provincial organization didn't adopt the policy and activist Murray Billett says: "It shouldn't have been an option; it should have been automatic."

While ASBA does have generic anti-bullying policies, EPSB proposed a policy specifically focusing on anti-gay bullying for the same reason the they adopted their own policy in Edmonton: "Generic anti-bullying policies are not as effective as standalone policies to protect the safety and well-being of our sexual minority students and staff."

Insanity, Death, or Abandonment

"A blue cloud of smoke wafted over the Famous Five statue that sits just east of the Senate doors. No one seemed to be going insane or looking like they were about to personally invade the United States. There were people of all colours in the crowd, but if any of them were members of The Ring, they hid it well. The peaceful demonstrators were, however, breaking the law, smoking a banned substance that could in theory have landed any one of them in prison." Emily Murphy’s legacy lives on in more ways than most care to remember.

House of Cards indeed

An amateur filmmaker is no longer pleading his innocence in the death of a man who was killed, cut up and dumped into a sewer. Mark Twitchell is accused of killing Johnny Altinger in what Twitchell's lawyer calls a publicity stunt for Twitchell's film gone awry.
The bizarre case involves faked e-mails from the victim, a home-made Iron Man costume, circumstantially damning Facebook postings and Altinger's burned and dismembered body being recovered from a sewer.

The crown contends the accused was imitating the central character of Dexter, from the Showtime series of the same name.

What If Everybody in Canada Flushed At Once? The water utility in Edmonton, EPCOR, published a graph of water consumption last week. By now you’ve probably heard that up to 80% of Canadians were watching the Olympics gold medal hockey game between Canada and the USA. So, it stands to reason that they’d all go pee between periods. More from The Globe and Mail.

One of the worst and best hockey plays you will ever see - all within fourteen seconds. Former first overall pick, Patrik Stefan of the NHL's Dallas Stars, gets an open shot at an empty net with fourteen seconds left in the game...and misses. The Edmonton Oilers regain control of the puck, make a long pass down the length of the ice and score to tie the game with two seconds left!

Who owns your name?

Who owns your name? I could not find this story on the web. I saw it in print. It appeared in an article by Geoffrey Vanderburg in the Friday Sept. 29th Edmonton Journal.
Here's an excerpt. "An internet company with links to the National Firearms Association has been ordered to give up a Web site using Justice Minister Anne McLellan's name. Smartcanuk Internet Services has been told to transfer control of annemclellan.com to Canada's justice minister, McLellan's Edmonton lawyer said Thursday"
Al Green, owner of Smartcanuk... says the ruling sets a "very very dangerous precedent."
"Sandra Sellers, an eResolution arbitrator...., decided Monday to grant transfer of annemclellan.com and annemclellan.org to McLellan."
McLellan was able to demonstrate that the domain name was identical or similar to a trade-mark, that Green had no legitimate interests in the name, and that the name was being used in bad faith....
Green argues McLellan is not a trademark, she's not famous and his use of the Web site does not constitute "bad faith"
I think I have to agree with the arbitrator on this one. If there is one last sacred domain we should be entitled to it is our own names. Although in the case of the John Smiths of the world that position is likely to take some heat. Any thoughts people?
