A Paternoster lift [wiki] is a cyclic elevator with "an endless chain of cabins moving at a moderate speed; some passing downward past a line of entrances and other cages moving upward past another set of openings. Passengers may embark or alight at any floor whenever they please, without delay. " (As seen on TV!) They're still in use in the the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and the UK among other places. Seattle PI have picked up the news that there's now competition in the race to build a space elevator. Liftport are the new kids on the block, with a website that only went online about 24 hours ago. I'm watching them build the message board as I type. Nothing like a bit of uplifting science news (pun unavoidable).

CNN and stock quotes would give me a headache. Popeye [WSJ sub] and Tom and Jerry cartoons would be annoying. The songbirds in Japanese elevators are better than Muzak, but how about a few moments of peace and quiet, please?

For people with a sick sense of homour: The makers of Conarde 2000 present a new game called Elevator Action. The rules are simple. Just try to stop the free fall of an elevator in a burning TV tower. What's next? A submarine game?
