Its back!!!!!!

Emo has made a resurgence. With the recent Saves The Day tour, popularity of bands like Joyce Manor, The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, and Pianos Become the Teeth, its safe to say that the oft derided musical style known as emo has made a resurgence.

All the footprints you've ever left, and the fear expecting ahead

There came into existence in the late 90s, two genres of music that took rock music, using just about any metric, to opposite extremes. Then someone came along and decided to cram them together into the same songs. [more inside]

"I was walking down the street; something caught my eye... and dragged it fifteen feet."

The original Emo. Wikipedia states that much of Emo Philips' standup comedy "stems from the use of paraprosdokians and garden path sentences." And, while there are plenty of quotes to support this, it doesn't quite do justice to the man who wrote the best God joke ever--it's in the way he delivers these lines. Experience true Emo here, through these links which I like to call, "Audio and Video Clips from Emo Philips' Website." [more inside]

None if by land, two if....oh, it's all so depressing.

How To Scream for Metal, Hardcore & Screamo

Learning to scream safely as a metal, hardcore or screamo vocalist can "take approximately a year", apparently. Handy tips offered here include "practice screaming into a pillow", and "scream along with music, especially songs in which screaming is already taking place." Bizarrely comprehensive, and probably useful, if you're into, uh, screaming.

The Outsider Within

The New York Times runs a front page Arts and Leisure feature on Dashboard Confessional and emo (no! it's not emo! not emo!) in general. It's always fun to see the Grey Lady's earnest, respectful, decidedly National Geographic take on youth subcultures (for example, something tells me the Dawson's Creek anecdote didn't happen quite the way it was reported). Despite its reputation for whiney self absorbment, the Subgenre That Will Not Be Named has produced some masterpieces; will it finally get the (pick one) respect/condemnation it deserves?

The word is out! The current chic in geek is clean-cut. So trim those beards (unless, of course, you practice the Muslim faith), drop the microbrews and drugs, and learn how to appreciate wine. Do it for the children, lest the terrorists win.
