Man recovers vision after 12 years by implanting tooth in eye

Recently, a man's sight was returned to him after losing it for 12 years. How did he do it? Surgeons drilled a hole through one of his canines, put a lens in it, and implanted the construct in his eye. The specific surgery is called Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis and was first pioneered in Italy in 1963. Essentially, a tooth and a small portion of the jaw is removed from the patient. A small hole is drilled into the tooth and a lens is attached inside. The tooth construct is implanted in the cheek to allow it develop a blood supply, and then later is implanted into the eye. Despite how unwieldy this procedure seems, it has a shockingly high success rate over time. In this survey of 181 patients, 85% retained functional use of their eye after 18 years, with approximately 55% retaining the best postoperative functionality.

eyevolution

Although the evolution of the eye is often pointed to by evolution's skeptics as evidence of design, biologists have been quick to point out evidence to the contrary. Today, Julian Partridge of Bristol University's Ecology of Vision Research Unit has brought to light evidence of a Pacific fish that has evolved biological mirrors for navigating murky water.

What Good Is Half A Machine?

One of the classic arguments against evolution by natural selection is
"what
good is half an X?" where X is an eye, a wing or some other complex
body part or system. Directly responding to the implicit challenge some researchers have been
not just figuring out how X could have
evolved, but actually evolving
new complex
machines (previously). The basic ideas are so
simple that web
versions (explanation
and discussion) have been popping
up.

The 123 Year Old Eyes

Bernt Aune's corneas are 123 years old, which possibly makes them the oldest living human tissue on record. Eduard Zirm performed the first successful corneal transplant was in 1905, and was soon followed by hundreds of successful transplantations. The Eye Bank Association of America was established in 1985, in part to provide regulation of eye banks in the US. Over 100 banks now operate in the country, and over 400 banks exist worldwide.

Until recently, most US eye banks only accepted eye tissue from donors aged 65 or less; a new study has shown that corneas from donors aged 66 to 75 can be used just as well. "This could expand the donor pool by 20 to 35 percent."

Here is a pamphlet [pdf] on the history of corneal and eye transplants from the EBAA.
A personal log of a cornea transplant.

The visible features of an iris arise in the trabeculum, a meshwork of connective tissue that displays arching ligaments, crypts, contraction furrows, a corona and pupillary frill, coloration, and sometimes freckles.
